Track & Field: Warriors Open Season in New England at Corsair Classic

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The Warriors competed at the Corsair Classic, hosted by UMass Dartmouth, on Friday and Saturday.
 
On Friday, the men's and women's hammer throw took place. All of the other track and field events occurred on Saturday. The Corsair Classic has been a consistent meet on the Warriors' schedule, giving the team an opportunity to compete against a Little East Conference opponent before the conference championship in four weeks.
 
In the women's hammer throw, Sam Murphy (Rocky Hill) led the Warriors, finishing 16th in a large field of 28 competitors. Murphy only had one legal throw, her third, and reached a distance of 29.22 meters (95'10). In the men's hammer throw, Ellis Thompson (Coventry) was able to win the event with his very first throw of the competition. Thompson took first in a field of 29 with a throw of 47.93m (157'3).
 
On Saturday, Noah Hauswirth (Branford) led three Warriors in the men's 10k, running 32:45.70 for second place in the field of ten. In the women's steeplechase, Keira Warner (Ellington) won the event with a time of 12:49.42, six seconds faster than second place. Hayden Baber (Gales Ferry) finished 29th with a time of 4:29.30 in the 1500m. In the men's 110m hurdles, Jack Harvell (Stafford) led the Warriors with a third-place finish in 16.03. Mary Levesque (Coventry) finished in 11th with a time of 18.77 in the women's 100m hurdles.
 
In the men's 400m, Kyle Kornacki (Voluntown) finished fourth in a field of 32, running 51.56 in the event. Khristian Kennedy (Waterbury) ran 11.71 in the men's 100m dash and Shannon Tallis (Suffield) placed third in the women's 100m dash in 13.09. In the men's 800m, Hayden Baber (Gales Ferry) ran 2:06.35 and Ella Caplet (Bozrah) was second in the women's 800m, running a time of 2:30.70. Harvell also competed in the 400m hurdles, crossing the line in 59.73 to break 60 seconds. Levesque ran 1:19.88 in the women's 400m hurdles.
 
In the men's 200m, Kennedy led the Warriors with a 23.93 and Tallis led with a 27.54. Jake Thompson (Portland) finished the men's 5000m in 16:08.71 for fourth overall. Isabel Cintron (Vernon) ran 20:25.19 in the women's 5000m. In the final event on the track, Eastern placed fifth in the men's 4x400m relay with a time of 4:04.10.
 
In the field, William LeCuyer (Milford) threw 43.94m (144'2) in the men's javelin throw for eighth overall. Chloe Hammer (Montville) competed in the women's javelin throw, hitting 22.64m (74'3). Murphy threw 23.12m (75'10) on her final throw in the women's discus and Ryan Mays (Windsor) threw 33.22m (109'0) in the men's discus. In the men's shot put, Jerron McNair (Hartford) threw 11.80m (38'8.5) on his first attempt. Murphy threw 7.86m (25'9.5) on her final attempt.
 
Katelyn DeNunzio (Bolton) finished second in the women's pole vault with her clearance of 2.50m (8'2.5). In the men's long jump, Christian Anderson (Danbury) finished fourth overall with a jump of 6.06m (19'10.5). Angelina Taccogna (Stratford) finished third in the women's triple jump with her mark of 10.15m (33'3.5). Anderson also competed in the triple jump, finishing third with his mark of 11.89m (39'0) on his fourth attempt.
 
The Warriors are back in action on Saturday, April 4, for the United States Coast Guard Spring Invitational. Similar to the Corsair Classic this weekend, the Warriors often compete at the USCGA Invitational and will stay in Connecticut until the New England Division III Championships at Blake Track in Springfield, MA.
 
In the U.S. Coast Guard Spring Invitational last year, the Warriors finished in second place out of ten teams on the men's side. The women's team finished in seventh place out of twelve teams and finished ahead of LEC opponents UMass Dartmouth.
