TROY, N.Y. – Eastern Connecticut State University senior
Fredrick Hewett (New London) put the finishing
touches on a standout three-year career by winning the 400 meter
dash in the final meet of his career Friday at the 2014 ECAC
Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Ned
Harkness Track & Field facility on the campus of RPI.
On the second and final day of the championships, Hewett paced a
field of 28 competitors with a winning time of 48.51 that was
enough to edge Oswego State junior Matthew Wagenhauser (48.55).
In two previous appearances in this meet, Hewett was
21st as a first-year sophomore in 2012 (51.64) and
20th as a junior last year (49.88).
The race was a contest of respective conference 400 meter
champions in Hewett (Little East Conference) and Wagenhauser (State
University of New York Athletic Conference). Hewett is ranked
25th nationally in Division III and Wagenhauser
32nd (48.50). Individuals with the 21 fastest times
qualify for the national championships.
Hewett set the program's 400 record of 48.28 in last
weekend's New England Open Championships.
Ranked in a seven-way tie for 24th nationally in the
high jump, Eastern senior Lauren Hultzman (Putnam)
shared 23rd place in a field of 29 with a jump of 5-0 at
the meet. She holds the Eastern outdoor record of 5-5 ¾.
