Hewett is 400 Titlist at ECAC Championships

TROY, N.Y. – Eastern Connecticut State University senior Fredrick Hewett (New London) put the finishing touches on a standout three-year career by winning the 400 meter dash in the final meet of his career Friday at the 2014 ECAC Division III  Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Ned Harkness Track & Field facility on the campus of RPI.

On the second and final day of the championships, Hewett paced a field of  28 competitors with a winning time of 48.51 that was enough to edge Oswego State junior Matthew Wagenhauser (48.55).

In two previous appearances in this meet, Hewett was 21st as a first-year sophomore in 2012 (51.64) and 20th as a junior last year (49.88).

The race was a contest of respective conference 400 meter champions in Hewett (Little East Conference) and Wagenhauser (State University of New York Athletic Conference). Hewett is ranked 25th nationally in Division III and Wagenhauser 32nd (48.50). Individuals with the 21 fastest times qualify for the national championships.

Hewett set the program's 400 record of 48.28 in last weekend's New England Open Championships.

Ranked in a seven-way tie for 24th nationally in the high jump, Eastern senior Lauren Hultzman (Putnam) shared 23rd place in a field of 29 with a jump of 5-0 at the meet. She holds the Eastern outdoor record of 5-5 ¾.
