MANSFIELD, Conn. – Patience paid off Sunday for the University of Saint Joseph (CT) women's soccer team, when the Blue Jays withstood 18 shots by Eastern Connecticut State University, and got a game-winning goal from sophomore forward Emily Burke with 6.6 seconds left in a 1-0 victory on the second day of the Fourth Annual Warrior Classic at the Mansfield Outdoor Complex.

It marked the second time in two years on the second day of the tournament that Saint Joseph (2-0-0) knocked off Eastern by a 1-0 score to capture both of its tournament matches. On the first day of the tournament Friday, the Blue Jays had downed Manhattanville College, 3-1, Friday and Eastern scored the only goal in a 1-0 triumph over Western New England University at Thomas Nevers Field.

Western New England (1-1-0) scored twice in less than two minutes, then added a penalty kick goal with 12 seconds left to dump Manhattanville, 3-0, in Sunday's first match.

Against Eastern, the game-winning goal came on Saint Joseph's third shot of the match – its only one in the second half – and made a winner of junior goalkeeper Melissa Dodge, who stopped nine Eastern shots in her first start of the season.

With the clock winding down in regulation, Eastern took a throw-in deep in its own end, but Saint Joseph junior Sara Barnick won the ball at the top of the box and sent it to space in the middle of the field, where Burke caught up with it from about 40 yards and one-timed a volley toward goal. The ball sailed over the head of the Eastern keeper and under the crossbar with 6.6 seconds left. As a freshman, it was Barnick who beat Eastern, 1-0, in the Warrior Classic, with her first career goal with 12 minutes left in the match.

The Warriors had multiple opportunities to go ahead in the match. Several times, Dodge held her ground and denied the Warriors on bids from in close on both the left and right flanks.

Eastern freshman Emily Becher (Brooklyn), one of five newcomers in the Eastern lineup and among 11 new players to see significant time, collected six of Eastern's shots, but Dodge denied her on four of those opportunities.

Becher was involved in three chances in an eight-minute span late in the game, but the Warriors could not capitalize on any of them. With 12 minutes left, Becher had successive shots, Dodge coming off her line to stuff one, and Becher drove the rebound wide. Less than a minute later, Becher found McKenzie Reimondo (Portland) with a perfect feed, but the freshman's hard shot caromed off the the left post. With four minutes left, Dodge held tight to the right post and denied Becher, who launched a drive in stride after controlled a feed from sophomore Hailey Lehning (Woodbury).

Saint Joseph's first shot four minutes into action was its best until the end, when senior Dayna Gamino's corner kick from the right side found Burke with room in the box, but Burke's one-timer sailed over the crossbar.

Eastern dominated the remainder of the first half, but could not break through. Reimondo's bid in the box on a pass from junior Maggie Sayers (Windsor Locks) was deflected over the top nine minutes into play; six minutes later, first-year sophomore Haley Stewart (Windham) unloaded both of her shots from inside the box. The first attempt came off senior Whitney Mantel's (Stamford) corner kick and was headed inside the right post before Barnick cleared it off the line. Dodge saved the second attempt.

Junior forward Brianna Curcio (Southbury) broke her leg when colliding with Dodge with 38:29 left in the match and will be lost for the season.

Eastern hosts Johnson & Wales University Friday at 4:30 p.m. at Nevers Field.

 Western New England U. 3, Manhattanville College 0

 Limited to two shots in Friday's 1-0 loss to host Eastern Connecticut, Western New England (1-1-0) broke a scoreless deadlock with two goals in a span of 1:37 early in the second half, finishing with 15 attempts and a +12 shot differential.

Junior Emma Norden, who played 52 minutes off the bench Friday, broke through for the Golden Bears in a starting role Sunday. She won the ball on the right side and carried down the right flank before sliding her only shot of the match across the goal mouth and inside the left post seven minutes into the second half.

Less than two minutes later, Western New England all but sewed up the game when junior Alicia Lewis – who was a dominant midfield presence throughout the match – cleaned up a cross from the right side which was knocked down by Valiant junior keeper Grace Kraemer.

 Senior Tayler Mazurski's penalty kick goal with 11.7 seconds left closed out the scoring.

 Manhattanville, which played with only two field position substitutes, was held without a shot until the midway point of the second half, when  junior Carolina Pelaez's uncontested shot travelled well over the crossbar and kept the margin at two goals. The Valiant's best opportunity came nine minutes later on junior Christie DeMarco's free kick just outside the box which also sailed over the crossbar.
