Box Score MANSFIELD, Conn. – Junior Amanda Jacobsen assisted on the tying and go-ahead goals in the first half and the Connecticut College field hockey team went on to a 3-2 non-conference victory over Eastern Connecticut State University Tuesday afternoon at the Mansfield Outdoor Complex.
Conn (3-9) won for the second straight time in handing Eastern (7-5) only its second home loss of the year, the previous home setback coming to nationally-ranked Babson College.
Conn, which has lost six matches to nationally-ranked opponents this year, erased Eastern's 1-0 lead by knotting the game five minutes after Eastern sophomore Alex Kallgren (Dudley, MA) scored her team-leading ninth goal of the season on senior Hannah Keiser's (Danbury) team-leading sixth assist of the season.
Sophomore Colbi Vaillancourt re-directed Jacobsen's drive to tie the match 13 minutes into action, and sophomore Katlyn Paiva's (Rehoboth, MA) team-leading sixth goal of the year on Jacobsen's assist with 2:22 left in the first half gave the Camels the lead for good. Jacobsen slotted a perfect through-ball to Paiva, who stick-handled around an Eastern defender and beat Eastern junior goalie Samantha Scavo (Redding) with a sweep-shot to give Conn its first lead.
One minute into the second half, Conn made it 3-1 when freshman Jamie Navoni (Natick, MA) knocked in a rebound of freshman Enya McGarry's drive from the top of the circle which bounced off the pad of Eastern sophomore goalie Maddie LaRusso (Enfield).
Eastern, which was held without a penalty corner after taking the only one of the first half with 6:05 left, sliced the gap to one goal five minutes into the second half but could not gain the equalizer over the final 30 minutes against Conn freshman goalie Lauren Pianucci. Senior Brianna Passero's (Trumbull) fourth goal of the year was set up by senior Laura Chicorka (Enfield), who carried into the circle and snapped off a shot which Pianucci blocked. Passero crashed in to clean up the rebound.
With the score tied in the first half, Eastern senior Mackenzie Brower (Granby) prevented the Camels from moving ahead when she stopped inside the left post to clear away a shot by Paiva with 7:30 left.
Trailing 2-1 with 28 seconds left in the first half, Eastern couldn't not capitalize when Conn sophomore Jacqueline Murphy was sent off for five minutes with a yellow card.
Conn managed only two penalty corners in the match – both in the second half -- the first coming with 10:50 left and the team clinging to a one-goal lead and the second coming with six minutes left. Neither resulted directly in a shot on goal.
Conn outshot Eastern 16-5, with Pianucci making three saves, Scavo four and LaRusso five.
Eastern returns to Little East Conference action Friday at Keene State College at 6 p.m. The top-seeded Owls went on to win last year's LEC playoffs after surviving against eighth-seeded Eastern in a first-round overtime win.
