Box Score LEESBURG, Fla. – Eight of SUNY Cortland's 19 hits went for extra bases as the Red Dragons pounded Eastern Connecticut State University, 14-2, Tuesday afternoon in college baseball at Pat Thomas Stadium.
Ranked No. 2 in the first ABCA Division III poll (released today), Cortland (11-0) scored 12 runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings on 15 hits. Nos. 3-4-5 hitters Donny Castaldo, Austin Clock and Adam Smith all homered in the game. Clock slammed a grand slam to open up a six-run third inning and Smith followed on the first pitch with his second homer of the season.
In the fourth, Sean Getman and Conrad Ziemendorf doubled and Castaldo launched a three-run home run to make it 10-0.
Castaldo and Clock both had four RBI and Smith led the Dragons with three hits. Cortland qualified for last year's NCAA Division III national tournament.
Sophomore right Evan Honce scattered two hits over the first four innings and left with a 10-0 lead and junior righty Turner Parry (1-0) pitched the next two innings to earn credit for the victory.
Junior third baseman Chad Adams (Ware, MA) had two of Eastern's (1-5) four hits. Senior righty Tyler Cyr (Bristol) – the first of six Eastern pitchers – was lifted after three innings. He was charged with six runs on seven hits in losing his second game in as many decisions.
Eastern plays its fourth Top 20 team Wednesday when it faces Birmingham-Southern College Wednesday at 10:15 a.m. at Auburndale, FL. The No. 4 Panthers won their first 14 before losing, 8-2, Monday to William Paterson University. BSC was scheduled to play Endicott College Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at Auburndale.
