Box Score WAPPINGERS FALLS, N.Y – Freshman D. J. Scavone (Auburn, MA) went 5-for-6 including two triples and a double and the Eastern Connecticut State University baseball team pounded out 20 hits on its way to a 12-7 Little East Conference victory over Western Connecticut State University at Dutchess Stadium Tuesday afternoon.
First-year junior transfer Chad Adams (Ware, MA) added three hits and three RBI for Eastern (10-11, 4-3 Little East), a winner of three straight. Western (11-8, 5-2 Little East) falls into a first-place tie in the LEC with the University of Southern Maine, while Eastern, UMass Dartmouth and Rhode Island College are a game back, sharing third place.
Trailing 4-3, Eastern tied the game with a run in the fourth on Adams' two-out single which plated sophomore centerfield Pat Sirois (Cromwell), and broke it open with six runs in the seventh on six hits, a walk, hit-by-pitch and two bunt singles. Scavone doubled to lead it off and Sirois (double) and Adams (single) later followed with two-run knocks.
Making his second start at leadoff, Sirois scored four runs and had two hits and two RBI. Scavone singled in the second, tripled in a run in the third, doubled and singled and scored in the seventh and tripled and scored in the ninth.
The second of two Eastern pitchers, senior lefty Matt D'Orsi (West Hartford) earned his first win of the season against three losses. He pitched two innings, allowing a hit and run and walking three. Freshman righty Hunter Hamlin (Mansfield) earned a three-inning save, the first of his career. Hamlin allowed fuor hits and two runs with two walks. In his fourth start of the year, senior righty Tyler Cyr (Bristol) worked the first four innings, departing with the score tied, 4-4. Two of the runs he allowed were unearned. He fanned six and walked only one and surrendered five hits.
Eastern hosts Suffolk University Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
