Box Score 2 PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Joe Yankee and Patrick Rogers each had five hits and combined for 12 RBI as they powered the Rhode Island College baseball team to a 10-2, 16-7 Little East Conference sweep of Eastern Connecticut State University Saturday afternoon at Anchorman Field.
Batting .350 as a team, Rhode Island (17-7, 6-3 Little East) roughed up Eastern starting pitchers Patrick O'Neill (Thomaston) and Orlando Gonzalez (Montville). The Anchormen chased Gonazlez (2-1) during a seven-run fourth inning in the first game and knocked out O'Neill (1-4) during a four-run fourth inning in the nightcap.
A winner of 11 of 14 games since returning from Winter Haven, Rhode Island had 13 of its 37 hits good for extra bases in scoring double-digit runs against Eastern in consecutive games for the first time in this 104-game series.
Eastern (11-13, 4-5 Little East) led 2-1 in the top of the fourth inning of the first game before RIC sent ten batters to the plate in the bottom of the inning and scored seven runs on six hits. Yankee doubled in two runs in the inning and Rogers greeted senior reliever Tyler Cyr (Bristol) with a two-run home run that closed out the inning.
The Warriors tied the second game, 4-4, by scoring two runs in the fifth on No. 3 hitter Andrew Scully's (Stratford) two-run double down the left field line, but Rhode Island countered with four runs in the bottom of the inning and five more in the sixth to break the game open.
Scully had four hits (two doubles) and three RBI in the doubleheader to raise his average to a team-leading .359. Senior Corey Keane (Tolland) doubled twice and freshman D.J. Scavone (Auburn, MA) launched his second home run of the year in the second game – a solo shot in the second inning. Senior Kyle Hart (Guilford) had an 11-game hitting streak halted in the first game when he flew out twice and grounded out twice.
Yankee drove in seven runs on the afternoon, contributing two doubles, while Rogers doubled and homered and plated five. Tyler Santaniello was 6-for-9 with four runs scored and freshman Brad Douglas had five hits and scored five runs.
Eastern hosts Western Connecticut State University Tuesday at 4 p.m. in a conference game.
