MANSFIELD, Conn. – An Eastern Connecticut State University field hockey team looking to make its mark this season on the strength returning all 11 starters, got off on the right foot with a 5-0 victory over Anna Maria College in the 2015 opener for both teams Tuesday evening at the Mansfield Outdoor Complex.
With one goal in the first 50 career matches to her credit, senior back Mackenzie Brower (Granby) scored twice and senior forward Hannah Keiser (Danbury) contributed the 21st of her career – the most by any active players – as the Warriors ran their all-time record against Anna Maria to 8-0. The AMCATS were coming off last year's ECAC tournament bid.
It marked the first time the Warriors have won their season-opener since they dumped Salve Regina University by a 3-1 score in 2010.
Sophomore Alex Kallgren (Dudley, MA) – last year's leading scorer with 11 goals – and junior forward Elly Walker (Scarborough, ME) each scored once. Walker came off the bench for the final goal with three minutes left. Kallgren also had an assist, as did junior back Alexandra Steward (Old Saybrook) and junior midfielder Caroline Regan (Niantic) off the bench.
Junior Samantha Scavo (Redding) and sophomore Maddie LaRusso (Enfield) combined in net for Eastern, with Scavo recording the duo's only two saves.
Eastern piled up a 30-2 advantage in shots and a 23-1 advantage in penalty corners. The Warriors collected seven corners before the game was 15 minutes old.
Eastern visits Lasell College Saturday at noon in a non-conference match.
