Box Score HARTFORD, Conn. –The Eastern Connecticut State University women's volleyball team couldn't hold a late one-point lead in the final set and was swept by Trinity College in the opening round of the Trinity College Invitational Friday night at Ray Oosting Gymnasium. Set scores were 25-13-25-12, 25-23.
Eastern (1-4) forced a Trinity (1-0) timeout after taking a 22-21 lead, but an Eastern attack error and Trinity service ace gave the Bantams a 23-22 lead. Eastern pulled even on a Trinity service error but a Trinity kill and service ace gave the Bantams the victory.
Trinity defeated Eastern for the 11th straight time, recording its eighth sweep in that stretch.
Trinity recorded 11 of its points on service aces, with Hanna Engstrom and Hunter Drews collecting four each.
Junior outside Adrianna Mihalek (Woodbury) topped Eastern with nine kills and a .261 attack percentage, but the rest of the team attacked at only .042. Senior libero Allie Luppi (Tewksbury, MA) led the Warriors with 11 digs.
Claudia Varner and Hunter Drews combined on ten kills with a .348 attack percentage, Kate Giddens sharing match-high dig honors with Luppi.
Saturday at Trinity, Eastern faces Westfield State University at noon and Clark University at 2 p.m. Clark defeated Eastern in three sets in the first match of the year Sept. 1 at Worcester, MA. Eastern swept Westfield a year ago in its final match at this tournament.
