Warriors Emerge With Tight 3-1 Verdict vs. SRU

Box Score

NEWPORT, R.I. – The Eastern Connecticut State University women's volleyball team came out of a timeout to score the final three points of the final set and nail down a four-game non-conference victory over Sale Regina University Tuesday night at the Rodgers Recreation Center. Game scores were 25-20, 25-17, 21-25, 25-23.

In the fourth set, Eastern (3-5) called time out trailing by a point, but responded with the final three points of the set on a set-tying kill from junior Adrianna Mihalek (Woodbury), and with freshman setter Leah Sopneski (Deep River) serving, secured the win on a Salve Regina (4-5) attack error and a match-ending block by sophomore Caryn Sibiskie (Rockfall).

Since winning the first 11 matches in this series, Eastern had lost four in a row prior to Tuesday night to the Seahawks, who lost six key players from last year's ECAC New England Division III championship team. The win for Eastern was its first on its opponent's home court in four tries.

After winning the first set, Eastern attacked at .423 to take an eight-point win in the second set and move out to a two-set lead. In the second set, the Warriors strung together four straight points to expand their lead to six, 18-12. Three Salve errors and Mihalek's service ace gave Eastern that four-point cushion and the Warriors were never seriously threatened thereafter.

Eastern never led after the opening points – but only trailed by one, 21-20 -- as Salve stayed alive with the four-point victory in the third set.

In the final set, Eastern twice led by three points – 15-12 on an SRU attack error and 20-17 on a kill from junior Kay Mullen (Fairhaven, MA) – but needed the final three points to overcome a late one-point deficit.

Sibiskie had five kills and a .625 attack percentage to go along with five blocks, sophomore Megan Macomber (South Windsor) six kills and a .455 attack percentage and Mullen eight kills and a .250 attack percentage. Mihalek led all players in the match with 12 kills and followed Allie Luppi's (Tewksbury, MA) match-high total of 19 digs with 11 digs. Mihalek also served three aces.

Eastern visits Wesleyan University in a non-conference match Thursday at 7 p.m.
