In LEC-Opening Draw, Warriors Extend Streaks

Box Score

PLYMOUTH, N.H. --  For the first time in seven starts this year, the No. 19 nationally-ranked Eastern Connecticut State University men's soccer team did not emerge with the result it wanted. However, the Warriors were able to extend two streaks in a 1-1 double overtime draw with Plymouth State University in the Little East Conference lid-lifter for both teams Saturday afternoon at Arold Field.

In playing Plymouth (2-3-1) to a 1-1 double overtime tie for the second straight year, Eastern extended unbeaten streaks against Plymouth (8-0-2) in this series and remained undefeated this season (6-0-1).

First-year sophomore Tyler Gibbs (East Windsor) became the eighth different player to score a goal this year for Eastern, ranked No. 3 in New England, when he broke a scoreless tie inside the final four minutes of the first half with his first career goal. A penalty kick by Nick Rutherford – his third goal of the season – pulled the Panthers even nine minutes into the second half, spoiling a bid for a fourth full shutout in seven starts for freshman keeper Ryan Murphy (Cromwell). Murphy made six saves, allowing but a single goal in his last three starts after posting shutouts in his first four starts.

Eastern visits Gordon College Tuesday at 4 p.m. The teams have traded 1-0 wins the last two years.
