Warriors Stun Six-Time LEC Champions, 3-0

Box Score

WILLIMANTIC, Conn. --  In its home-opener, the Eastern Connecticut State University women's volleyball team ended the University of Massachusetts Boston's 14-match Little East Conference regular-season win streak with a three-set sweep Saturday afternoon in the conference opener for both teams at Francis E. Geissler Gymnasium.

Eastern (4-6) won by scores of 27-25, 26-24, 25-20 in ending an eight-match losing streak at the hands of UMass (2-8) and becoming the first LEC team to sweep the Beacons since Plymouth State University on October 25, 2011. Until Saturday, Plymouth had been the last LEC team to defeat UMass Boston in the regular-season, winning in five sets on October 23, 2012 in the final regular-season match of the year. UMB followed with consecutive unbeaten (7-0) regular seasons.
UMass, which has won or shared the last six LEC regular-season titles, has lost six of its matches this year to teams ranked in either the national Top 25 or to a team which has received votes in the most recent national poll.
Eastern survived set point to score the final three points of the first set. Successive kills by Eastern junior Adrianna Mihalek's (Woodbury) tied the set, then gave the Warriors the lead, 26-25, and a bad UMass set gave the Warriors only their second set victory over the Beacons in the last nine matches.

In the second set, UMass junior Colleen Koen's kill pulled UMB into a 24-24 tie before the Warriors answered with the final two points, one coming on another of Mihalek's kills.  Eastern never trailed after UMB scored the first point of the second set, and led by five, 17-12, but need to score the final  two points after UMB pulled even on Koen's kill.

Like they did in the opening set, Eastern scored the first three points of the first set and never trailed. The Warriors opened up an 11-point, 20-9 lead but had to hang on after UMass cut the gap to three, 23-20. With the hosts clinging to that three-point lead, junior Hannah Bryant (Avon) contributed a critical kill to move Eastern to within match point, and after a timeout, junior Ashley Adams (Mystic) put the match in the win column with a kill.

Mihalek led all players in the match with 17 kills and attacked at .302, while Bryant added ten kills and Adams seven. Senior libero Allie Luppi (Tewksbury, MA) amassed a career-high 32 digs, Mihalek chipping in 12. Luppi also had only one error on 30 reception attempts. Freshman Leah Sopneski (Deep River) and sophomore Amanda Tourjee (Waterford) combined on 31 assists. Sophomore Caryn Sibiskie (Rockfall) totalled five blocks.

Koen and junior Julia Murphy combined for 22 kills for UMass, Koen leading the way with 12 and Murphy attacking at .280. Junior Pepper Baker totalled 30 assists and junior libera Elizabeth Glavan was perfect on 28 reception attempts to go along with a team-high 16 digs. Senior Bri Sousa led UMB with five blocks.

Eastern hosts Albertus Magnus College Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
