Box Score MANSFIELD, Conn. -- The Eastern Connecticut State University field hockey team was able to end Babson College senior goalie Kayla Costa's long scoreless streak, but couldn't snap its long losing streak at the hands of the No. 19 nationally-ranked Beavers, dropping a 3-1 non-conference decision Tuesday afternoon at the Mansfield Outdoor Complex.
After Babson (8-0) broke through just 1:32 into action, Eastern (3-3) ended Costa's scoreless streak at 231 minutes and six seconds when sophomore forward Alex Kallgren (Dudley, MA) – ranked in a tie for third in the Little East Conference in goals – beat the goalie at the left post on senior Hannah Keiser's (Danbury) drive into the circle off Kallgren's penalty corner to tie the match with 12 minutes left in the first half.
Babson, off to its best start in program history, gained its tenth straight win over Eastern in this ten-game series when junior Kelsi McDougle and senior tri-captain Elizabeth Holmes scored just over two minutes apart 12 minutes into the second half. The goal was the second of the match and team-leading ninth for Holmes, whose strike off a penalty corner had given the Beavers their early 1-0 lead.
With the score tied early in the second half, Eastern senior Laura Chicorka (Enfield) made a bid to give Eastern the lead off a penalty corner but knocked the shot off Costa's pad. Babson countered four minutes with a great scoring chance when Holmes carried in alone on Eastern sophomore keeper Maddie LaRusso (Enfield) on a feed from Catherine Gilman but LaRusso answered with a pad save of her own.
With the score still tied, freshman Lauren Drakeley and sophomore Julie Mortimer both had point-blank shots eight minutes into the second half (Mortimer taking two), but LaRusso kicked out all three.
Costa, ranked fifth nationally in goals-against average (0.30) entering play, had two saves. LaRusso turned back four shots over the first 50 minutes and junior Samantha Scavo (Redding) denied one shot the rest of the way.
Eastern hosts Framingham State University Saturday at noon in a Little East Conference match.
