Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. -- Kristen Boyer's kill and block assists from Jill McManaman and Lara Lolacono late in the third set allowed Roger Williams University to capture the pivotal set and go on to a four-set victory over Eastern Connecticut State University in a non-conference women's volleyball match Saturday afternoon at the Campus Rec Center. Set scores were 15-25, 25-14, 19-25, 16-25.
After the teams split the first two sets, Eastern (14-8) cut an eight-point deficit to one, 16-15 in the third set. Leading 19-17, Roger Williams (15-6) got a kill from Boyer on a set from Julia Fields, and McManaman and Lolacono teamed to block Eastern senior Kay Mullen's (Fairhaven, MA) attack attempt to make it a four-point set, 21-17. After the Warriors had cut the deficit to 16-15, the Hawks closed it out with a 9-4 run.
Eastern had won five of its previous six prior to Saturday, while last year's NCAA tournament qualifiers have now won four of their last five.
Senior outside hitter Adrianna Mihalek (Woodbury) paced both teams with 16 kills and attacked at .423. She also had a .955 reception percentage on 22 attempts. Junior middle Caryn Sibiskie (Rockfall) had seven kills and four blocks, and junior libero Michelle Valliere (Lebanon) a match-high 24 digs Sophomore setter Leah Sopneski (Deep River) had 19 assists and ten digs and senior setter Fabiana Della-Monica (Newark, DE) 17 assists.
Coming off the ten-point loss in the first set, Eastern rallied for an 11-point victory in the second set to even the match. Despite attacking at just .169 in the match, the Warriors attacked at .455 in the second set. Mihalek had eight kills and a .636 attack percentage. Sopneski and Della-Monica combined for 15 assists and Valliere dug up nine balls.
Eastern visits Johnson & Wales University Tuesday for a 7 p.m. non-conference match.
