Box Score 2 WALTHAM, Mass. – The Eastern Connecticut State University women's volleyball team commited only two reception errors in winning the final two sets by a total of five points in a four-set victory over Salve Regina University Saturday afternoon in a non-conference tri-match at the Gosman Center on the Brandeis University campus.
Against Salve (10-8), four sets were decided by a total of ten points, with Eastern (13-7) emerging with 25-23, 22-25, 25-22, 27-25 decisions to defeat the Seahawks for the 13th time in the 17-match series.
In danger of falling behind in the match, Eastern rallied to win the third set by scoring 14 of the final 17 points.
Against Salve, senior outside Adrianna Mihalek (Woodbury) attacked at .311, totaling a match-high 18 kills, and also served three aces. Mihalek and junior Michelle Valliere (Lebanon) combined to handle 63 of 68 receptions, with Valliere leading all players in the match with 24 digs. Sophomore Leah Sopneski (Deep River) had 24 assists and senior Fabiana Della-Monica (Newark, DE) 19 assists and four service errors.
Eastern opened the day with a four-set loss to host Brandeis (7-9), the Judges winning by scores of 25-14, 20-25, 25-20, 25-17. In the second set victory that squared the match, the Warriors led early and pushed the lead to 19-10 on a Brandeis service error and service ace from junior middle Caryn Sibiskie (Rockfall).
In eight sets, Mihalek accumulated 31 kills and four aces, senior middle Kay Mullen (Fairhaven, MA) 16 kills with a .250 attack percentage and four blocks, junior outside Carly Balskus (Hebron) 12 kills and Sibiskie eight kills with a .294 attack percentage and five aces. Sopneski totaled 39 assists and Della-Monica 27 assists and four service aces. Mihalek had a .938 reception percentage on 48 receptions and Valliere was at .891 on 64 tries. Valliere (38), Sopneski (15) and senior Nina Zimmitti (East Hampton) (14) topped the team in digs.
Eastern returns to Little East Conference play Tuesday at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth at 7 p.m.
