Box Score WILLIMANTIC, Conn. -- Senior center Lexis Foster (Groton) had her third double-double of the season with 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds and blocked five shots and junior guard Kelly Reardon (Holyoke, MA) sank a key field goal with three minutes left as the Eastern Connecticut State University women's basketball team ended the six-game winning streak of Williams College with a 53-46 non-conference victory Wednesday evening at Francis E. Geissler Gymnasium.
Williams (6-2) led only once – by one point in the opening minutes – as Eastern (4-3) ended a three-game losing streak this year and a four-game slide against the Ephs.
The Warriors led by 14 points – their largest lead of the game -- after senior guard Julia DePoi (Brookfield) sank her first three-point field goal attempt with nine minutes left. Williams whittled away and cut the gap to four, 42-38, on a three-point field goal from junior guard Amanni Fernandez (Queens, NY) which capped a ten-point Williams run. At that point, Reardon swished a shot from just above the foul line on a possession set up by sophomore forward Kelsey Santagata's (Stamford) block. DePoi then stole the ball and got it to Santagata ahead of the field, who dropped it in to push the Eastern lead back to eight, 46-38, with 2:32 left.
With Eastern shooting just 62.8 percent from the foul line this year, Foster and senior guard Jordyn Nappi (Southington) combined to bury seven of eight from the stripe in the final two minutes, helping the Warriors to a 12-of-14 performance from the stripe in the game.
Foster, a 53.6 percent free throw shooter this year, converted three of four free throws in a 30-second stretch in the final minutes and Nappi, the program's third all-time leader in free throw percentage, was perfect on four ties, the second two with 15.4 second left making it a seven-point game.
Nappi had her seventh straight double-digit scoring game this year with a game-high 16 points. Santagata chipped in eight points and eight rebounds.
Fernandez of Williams equaled Nappi with 16 points in 27 minutes off the bench, while senior forward Lauren McCall (Natick, MA) had nine points and a team-high eight rebounds. The Ephs shot just 32 percent from the floor in the game, although behind McCall and Fernandez -- each 3-of-3 from long range – the visitors connected on eight of 15 three-point attempts.
Eastern returns to Little East Conference action Saturday at Rhode Island College at 1 p.m.
