Men's Lacrosse: Warriors' Late Bid Falls Short in Home-Opening Loss to Cardinals

Box Score

MANSFIELD, Conn. – The SUNY Plattsburgh men's lacrosse team limited Eastern Connecticut State University to two goals through the first 53 minutes on the way to an 8-5 non-conference victory in the Warriors' home-opener Friday afternoon at the Mansfield Outdoor Complex.

A winner of three straight since dropping its first two against national Top 10 teams, Plattsburgh (3-2) outshot Eastern, 42-27, and senior Joey Kromer equaled his faceoff win percentage of 70 percent this year by taking 12 of 17 against two Eastern opponents at the faceoff X.

Plattsburgh's early goal from junior Ryan Callahan was the difference until late in the first quarter before sophomore Mathew Prokesch gave the visitors a two-goal edge after one period. After Eastern sophomore Harrison Urda (Milford, NH) finally broke through five minutes into the second quarter, the Cardinals took the game over, shutting out the Warriors the rest of the quarter and until two minutes remained in the third in moving out to a decisive 6-1 lead.

Eastern outscored Plattsburgh 3-1 over the final seven minutes of the game to account for the final three-goal deficit.

Five different Eastern players scored once, with senior Michael Dellanno (Wakefield, MA) setting up scores by sophomore Matthew Rougeot (Cheshire) – the only man-up goal of match (both teams had five opportunities) – with two minutes left in the third quarter, and by senior Liam Murphy (Dover, NH) witih six minutes left in the contest.

Senior Brendan Damm netted his seventh and eighth goals of the season four minutes apart in the second quarter to take over the team lead in that category, with Callahan's seventh opening the scoring with 1:12 gone in the contest.

Eastern senior Blake Smaldone (Hamilton, MA) and Plattsburgh senior Matt Massaria each stopped 11 shots. Smaldone made seven stops when the Cardinals unloaded 19 shots in the second quarter, and Massaria needed only five saves after shutting out the Warriors with six saves in the first quarter.

Eastern visits Roger Williams University Wednesday at 4 p.m.
