Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – Senior Dan Arket won the final two faceoffs of the match – setting up the tying goal with three seconds left and the game-winner 1:19 into sudden-death overtime – as the Roger Williams University men's lacrosse team defeated Eastern Connecticut State University, 12-11, Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference match at Bayside Field.
Leading 10-7 with nine minutes left in regulation, Eastern (1-3) was held to one goal the rest of the way. That one goal – the only one of the match for Eastern junior Shawn Tierney (Norwell, MA) – broke the second tie of the match and gave the Warriors an 11-10 lead with 14 seconds left. Arket saved the day for Roger Williams (2-3), however, by winning the faceoff when senior captain Eric Valenti controlled the ground ball and fed senior Nick Gagnon, who scored his game-high sixth of the match with three seconds left.
Arket was credited with the final faceoff win of the match to start overtime when Eastern was whistled for a faceoff violation. He picked up his sixth ground ball to give the Hawks possession, and sophomore Justin MacIntyre ended the match when he potted his second goal of the match and season on a feed from junior Max Cammarota 1:19 into the extra session.
The win was the first for the Hawks over Eastern in this five-game series, the teams last meeting in 2009. Two of Roger Williams' losses this year have come against teams ranked among the Top 10 in New England.
Senior Tim Reilly (Hanover, MA) and sophomore Matthew Rougeot (Cheshire) each scored twice and Tierney had two assists in a run of four straight goals that lifted the Warriors into a lead (5-3) which they preserved until senior Nick Gagnon tied the match, 10-10, with an unassisted goal with just under a minute left. Eastern junior Jesse Schulze (Croton-on-Hudson, NY) won the next faceoff when senior Dan Vasquez (Newington) claimed the ground ball, and after a timeout, Tierney connected on his fourth goal of the season on a pass from Reilly with 14 seconds left.
Eastern senior goalie Blake Smaldone (Hamilton, MA), equaled his season save average by stopping 15 shots, six coming in the second quarter on 14 shots to help the Warriors forge a 3-3 halftime tie.
Rougeot led Eastern with a career-high four goals and an assist, Reilly contributing three goals and two assists. Tierney and senior Michael Dellanno (Wakefield, MA) each had two assists. Schulze won ten faceoffs and Reilly picked up a team-high seven ground balls.
The overtime match was the first for Eastern in just over six years, when the host Warriors scored 2:24 into OT to edge Montclair State University, 11-10.
