Box Score HENNIKER, N.H. – The Eastern Connecticut State University men's lacrosse team erased an early five-goal deficit – giving up only two goals over the final three quarters – to record an 8-7 come-from-behind victory over New England College Tuesday afternoon.
The win is the first for Eastern (2-4) since its season-opener while New England sustained its fifth loss in as many outings.
The Eastern defense gave up two goals over the final 45 minutes and got the tying and eventual game-winning goals when senior Cody Carbone (North Reading, MA) scored his first goal since 2014 to pull the Warriors even with 6:15 left, and first-year sophomore defenseman Trevor Ross (Stratford) struck for the first of his career 50 seconds later. Each scored from virtually the same spot on the field and connected on their only shots of the match.
The tying and go-ahead goals were set up on New England turnovers, junior Shawn Tierney (Norwell, MA) causing the first ground ball that was picked up by junior midfielder Jesse Schulze (Croton-on-Hudson, NY) and the second ground ball was corralled by senior defenseman Scott Thomson (Wilton).
Having loss its previous four matches by a total of five goals, Eastern was outscored 5-0 in the first quarter, but shut down the Pilgrims the rest of the way. Senior midfielder Michael Dellanno (Wakefield, MA) began the late surge by cutting New England's three-goal lead to two with the final goal of the third quarter with six minutes left in the session. Eastern then evened the score early in the fourth quarter when senior midfielder Dan Vasquez (Newington) scored a man-down goal and Dellanno contributed an extra-man, game-tying strike two minutes later.
Senior goalie Blake Smaldone (Hamilton, MA) made three of his seven saves in the final quarter, while William Platt of New England stopped 13 of Eastern's 40 shots.
Dellanno topped the Warriors with three goals and two assists, his second assist setting up Carbone's game-tying goal and giving him ten goals and ten assists this year. Senior attack Tim Reilly (Hanover, MA) had a goal and two assists, his second assist finding Ross with the game-winner. Dellanno and Reilly combined for 19 of Eastern's shots.
Senior defender Giuseppe Parisi (Danbury) caused three turnovers and Ross and Thomson each picked up three ground balls.
