Box Score NEWTON, Mass. – The Eastern Connecticut State University men's lacrosse team limited Mount Ida College to one goal in a span of more than 32 minutes in recording a 13-10 non-conference victory Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field
The win is the second straight for Eastern (3-4), which played its sixth match this year decided by three or less goals, the contests being decided by a total of 11 goals. The Warriors are 5-0 all-time against Mount Ida (4-4), which lost at home for the first time in four outings this year.
Mount Ida tied the match at 4-4 with 1:18 left in the first quarter, but was held to just one goal for the next 32 minutes before Wyatt Sullivan scored his only goal of the match eight seconds into the fourth quarter. By the time Sullivan broke through, however, the Warriors had moved out to a five-goal lead, 11-6.
Sullivan's goal was the first of three in a row for Mount ida in a stretch of just under six minutes and cut the Eastern lead to three, 12-9, with five minutes left. Eastern senior goalie Blake Smaldone (Hamilton, MA) preserved that three-goal advantage with one of his nine saves. After the Warriors cleared the ball (they were 19-for-19 in the game), Mount Ida freshman goalie Cam Hayward stopped Eastern's first shot, but senior Michael Dellanno (Wakefield, MA) picked up the ground ball and fed senior attack Tim Reilly (Hanover, MA), who halted the Mustangs' momentum and restored Eastern's four-goal lead with three minutes left.
The key to Eastern's wins were winning 16-of-26 faceoffs -- junior midfielder Jesse Schulze (Croton-on-Hudson, NY) was 15-of-25 -- being charged with only one penalty (Mount Ida capitalized on its only man-up opportunity) and owning a 40-31 advantage in ground balls.
Dellanno led the Warriors with three goals and two assists, senior midfielder Dan Vasquez (Newington) adding two goals and two assists, sophomore attack David Borovsky (Burlington) three goals, senior midfielder Liam Murphy (Dover, NH) two goals and an assist and Reilly a goal and two assists.
