Box Score HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- The Eastern Connecticut State University men's lacrosse team suffered through a 36-minute scoreless drought and compounded that by commiting ten penalties which paved the way for five extra-man goals by SUNY Oneonta in a 14-8 loss Saturday evening at Shuart Stadium on the campus of Hofstra University.
Eastern (1-1) answered three early Oneonta (1-0) goal by scoring two of its own on strikes by senior Dan Vasquez (Newington) and junior Kent Tiden (Old Saybrook) before being held off the board for over 36 minutes. Senior Michael Dellanno (Wakefield, MA) broke through with a man-up goal 3:15 into the fourth quarter. By that time, however, the Warriors were staring at a six-goal deficit.
Beginning with Dellanno's goal – his third of the season -- Eastern matched goals with the Red Dragons over the final 11:45, but it was not nearly enough to make a serious dent in Oneonta's lead.
Eastern was tagged with ten penalties, and Oneonta made the most of its man-up opportunities to score five times – three coming in succession when it upped a two-goal lead to five with three minutes left in the third quarter. Leading by six after Eastern senior Tim Reilly (Hanover, MA) scored the first of his two goals on a feed from Dellanno, the Red Dragons tacked on two more man-up goals in a span of 12 seconds to make it 14-5 with 5:37 left.
Reilly and Tiden (two each) were the Warriors' only multiple-goal scorers, while junior Nathan Doody topped four Oneonta multiple-goal scorers with four. Doody's first two goals came early and staked his team to a quick 2-0 lead, and the first of senior Patrick Colligan's three goals made it 3-0 before Vasquez and Tiden answered for Eastern.
Oneonta outshot Eastern, 58-30, with the Warriors needing senior goalie Blake Smaldone's (Hamilton, MA) fifth game of at least 20 saves (22) in the last two seasons to prevent a lop-sided loss.
Doody (14) and senior Connor Coyle (12) combined to collect nearly half of Oneonta's 58 shots.
Senior Eddie Dorr (Winchester, MA) won four of eight faceoffs for the Warriors, while senior Giuseppe Parisi (Danbury) and junior Jesse Schultz (Croton-on-Hudson, NY) each picked up three ground balls.
Eastern opens its home season Friday against SUNY Plattsburgh at 4 p.m.
