Box Score 2 MANSFIELD, Conn. – Freshman lefty Nick Rascati (Wallingford) pitched 3 1/3 scoreless innings to close out the first-victory and senior catcher Tim Budd (Cheshire) drove in three runs with two hits in the nightcap as the Eastern Connecticut State University baseball team swept its second Little East Conference home doubleheader in two days Sunday with 3-2, 7-3 victories over the University of Massachusetts Boston at the Eastern Baseball Stadium.
One day after gaining a win in middle relief against Keene State College, Rascati (2-0) retired ten of the final 11 batters after diffusing a six-inning UMass Boston (10-11, 1-3 LEC) rally and earn his first save in the opener.
In the second game, freshman righty John Parker (Brunswick, ME) limited the Beacons to two runs on six hits over the first five innings. A winner of five straight, Eastern (13-5, 4-0 LEC) broke a 2-2 tie in the nightcap with single runs in the fourth (Budd's RBI single with two out) and fifth (walk, error and ground ball), then pulled away by scoring three times in the seventh on a leadoff error, freshman Alexander White's (West Hartford) two-run double to left and junior Alex Zachary's (Enfield) two-out RBI single through the right side.
Budd drove in four runs on the afternoon and freshman Alex Parkos (Meriden), Budd, junior Pat Sirois (Cromwell) and White added two hits apiece. Parkos' hits were doubles and sophomore D.J. Scavone Auburn, MA) hit the only home run of the day – a one-out solo blast that tied the first game, 1-1, in the second inning.
Senior righty Patrick O'Neill (Thomaston) pitched four solid innings of middle relief after taking over for Parker (2-1) after the first two UMB batters reached with the Warriors leading 4-2 in the sixth. O'Neill scattered two hits and was charged with only one run. Parker spaced six hits while fanning five and allowing only two runs.
UMass Boston had 18 hits off six Eastern pitchers in the doubleheader but stranded 11 runners in each game.Kyle Boudrias led the Beacons with four hits and had two RBI as the only UMB hitter to drive in more than one run.
Eastern hosts Suffolk University Wednesday at 4 p.m. in a non-conference game.
