Box Score MANSFIELD, Conn. – The Eastern Connecticut State University baseball team sent 17 batters to the plate in the fifth inning and scored 12 runs on five hits – including a three-run inside-the-park home run -- six walks, two hit batters and an error on the way to a 19-5 non-conference victory over Westfield State University Thursday evening at the Eastern Baseball Stadium.
For Eastern (15-10) in the game, Chad Adams (Ware, MA) drove in six runs with a pair of two-run singles and two sacrifice flies as Eastern improved to 7-1 at home.
Six Westfield (14-16) pitchers allowed 15 hits, walked 12 and hit two batters, with six of the walks and hit-by-pitch eventually scoring.
Junior centerfielder Alex Zachary (Enfield) hit his team-leading sixth home run of the season – a three-run inside-the-park blast to center which was lost in the lights and rolled to the center field wall.
Freshman leftfielder Alexander White (West Hartford) reached safely five times with two hits and three walks and drove in two runs with a pair of singles.
In the 12-run fifth inning which broke open a tight game, 11 of the runs came across after there were two out. In the inning, Adams had both of his two-run singles; sophomore first baseman D.J. Scavone (Auburn, MA) walked, had an RBI double and scored twice, senior catcher Tim Budd (Cheshire) had an RBI double, was hit by a pitch and scored twice, and junior shortstop Christian Budzik (Cromwell) walked twice and scored twice. Scavone, Budd and Budzik were batting in the lower third of the order.
Freshman lefty Nick Rascati (Wallingford) – the third of six Eastern pitchers – was credited with his third win in four decisions by fanning two in a 1-2-3 sixth inning. Making his third start, redshirt freshman righty Jason Staub (Portland) was lifted in the fourth inning after allowing eight hits and three runs. He left with a 4-3 lead and the Warriors followed with two runs in the fourth and 12 in the fifth.
Freshman DH Aaron Clancy reached three times for Westfield with two singles and a walk and scored two runs. Senior third baseman Tyler Adams also reached safely three times with two singles and a walk. He drove in two runs with his first single and when walked with the bases loaded.
Eastern hosts Rhode Island College Saturday in a Little East Conference doubleheader at noon.
