Box Score 2 HARTFORD, Conn. – The Eastern Connecticut State University women's volleyball team attacked at a season-high .357, served nine aces and commited only one reception error as the Warriors closed out a three-match appearance at the Trinity College Invitational Saturday afternoon with a sweep of Westfield State University at the Ferris Athletic Center. Set scores were 25-15, 25-11, 25-15.
Eastern (7-2) sandwich an opening win against host Trinity College Friday night and the three-set sweep of Westfield State (0-6) Saturday afternoon with a four-set loss to Clark University (5-3) Saturday morning. Eastern won the opening set against Clark before dropping three straight. Set scores were 25-19, 16-25, 18-25, 20-25.
Clark, coming off a 22-8 season last year, won the tournament by sweeping Trinity later Saturday to finish 3-0. Eastern was the only team to take a set from the Cougars. In the tournament, the Warriors finished second (2-1), Trinity third (1-2) and Westfield fourth (0-3).
With its 15th consecutive win over Westfield without a loss, Eastern equaled its best overall record after nine matches in 18 years. In 1998, the team opened 8-1 on the way to a 16-1 mark, and later reached the second round of the NCAA tournament, finishing 34-8. The 2001 and 2011 clubs both started 7-2 but the '01 team lost its next two and 2011 club its next three.
Against Westfield, senior outside Adrianna Mihalek (Woodbury) had match-highs of 14 kills and a .444 attack percentage, and 6-foot-1 inch senior middle Kay Mullen (Fairhaven, MA) and senior outside Ashley Adams (Mystic) chipped in five kills each. Mullen attacked at .400, with junior middle Caryn Sibiskie (Rockfall) contributing four kills without an error on ten tries.
With sophomore setter Leah Sopneski (Deep River) sitting out the tournament with an injury, senior Fabiana Della-Monica (Newark, DE) and junior Amanda Tourjee (Waterford) each had 12 assists. Six-foot-1 inch middle Megan Macomber (South Wiindsor) and freshman middle Natalia Rickey (Plainfield) totaled three blocks apiece. Mihalek and senior defensive specialist Nina Zimmitti (East Hampton) each had three service aces. Zimmitti and junior libero Michelle Valliere (Lebanon) combined for 19 digs.
Since losing seven in a row to Eastern, Clark won its sixth straight against the Warriors in Saturday's morning match. Leading 2-sets-to-1, the Cougars put together a decisive 5-1 run to turn a two-point deficit into a two-point lead, 19-17, and clinch the match.
Against Clark, Mihalek and Mullen combined for 20 kills and a .300 attack percentage, with Sibiskie adding six kills, a .353 attack percentage, five blocks, six digs, and three aces. Tourjee had 21 assists and matched Mihalek with three aces and Macomber had four blocks. Mihalek led Eastern with 13 digs, Valliere chipping in nine and Zimmitti seven.
In 12 tournament sets, Mihalek averaged 3.00 kills with a .337 attack percentage, Mullen 2.00 kills with a .291 percentage, and Sibiskie 1.18 kills with a .282 percentage and a team-high nine blocks. Valliere totaled 33 digs, Zimmitti 24 and Mihalek 20 and Macomber had seven blocks and Adams six. Tourjee's 64 assists led the team and she shared the team lead with Mihalek with eight service aces each.
Eastern hosts Albertus Magnus College Tuesday at 7 p.m.
