Box Score 2 MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – Winning close games is the sign of an experienced team. With seven seniors in 2016, the Eastern Connecticut State University women's volleyball team has used its seasoned roster to its advantage -- at least through the early going.
On the first day of the Morrisville State College Invitational Saturday, the Warriors swept a pair of matches against Maritime College and Hartwick College, improving their record in sets decided by five or less points to 6-0. Eastern (3-0) has captured all nine sets in the opening days of the season, giving the Warriors only their second 3-0 start in the past 15 years.
Coming off Thursday's season-opening home sweep of Massachusetts College, Eastern downed Maritime (0-2), 25-18, 25-20, 25-16 and Hartwick (1-1), 25-20, 25-23, 25-20 Saturday. It was the first meeting ever between the programs.
Three-time All-Little East Conference outside hitter Adrianna Mihalek (Woodbury) led Eastern on the day with 26 points, junior middle Caryn Sibiskie (Rockville) following with 22 points and senior outside Ashley Adams (Mystic) and senior middle Kay Mullen (Fairhaven, MA) collecting 18 apiece.
Mihalek amassed her team-leading point total with 21 kills, four service aces and a block assist; Sibiskie with seven kills, 11 blocks and four aces; Adams with 14 kills and four block assists; and Mullen with 13 kills and five block assists.
Junior libero Michelle Valliere (Lebanon) collected a team-high 27 digs, Mihalek contributing 17 and senior Nina Zimmitti (East Hampton) 12. Sophomore setter Leah Sopneski (Deep River) had 35 assists and junior Amanda Tourjee (Waterford) 22.
Against Hartwick, Mihalek totaled 12 kills and nine digs, first-year junior transfer Carly Balskus (Hebron) seven kills with a .294 attack percentage and six digs, Adams eight kills and a .333 attack percentage and three block assists.
Sunday, Eastern meets host Morrisville State at 11 a.m. and Kean University at 3 p.m.
