Box Score 2 MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Eastern Connecticut State University women's volleyball team extended its streak to 12 consecutive set victories this year by sweeping host Morrisville State College before dropping a five-set decision to Kean University on the second day of the Morrisville State Invitational Sunday.
Eastern (4-1), Morrisville (3-1) and Kean (5-0) all entered the match undefeated. Having won its first three matches this year in straight sets, Eastern swept Morrisville, 25-22, 25-16, 25-13 before dropping 21-25, 25-21, 23-25, 25-17, 10-15 decisions to Kean. The Warriors finished 3-1 in the tournament, second to Kean (4-0).
Eastern evened the match against Kean with its eight-point victory in the fourth set, but was outscored 8-1 after moving out to a 9-7 lead in the decisive fifth set. The Warriors wiped out an early 3-0 deficit in the fifth set, taking their first lead, 8-7, on a kill from 6-foot-1 inch senior Kay Mullen (Fairhaven, MA). Leading 9-7, Eastern went cold, as the Cougars reeled off six straight points on an assortment of kills and Eastern attack errors to take command, 13-9.
The first set against Morrisville was the only close one for Eastern against the Mustangs, the Warriors outscoring the hosts 7-1 to take their first lead, 11-10, behind the serving of sophomore Leah Sopneski (Deep River). The set was tied six times before senior all-tournament selection Adrianna Mihalek's (Woodbury) tenth and final kill pushed her team into the lead for good, 17-16. With the Mustangs later serving to tie the match, Mullen and six-foot junior Caryn Sibiskie (Rockville) combined on a block to move Eastern to within a point, and with senior Amanda Tyler (Longmeadow, MA) serving, Mullen finished off Morrisville with her eighth kill on a set from junior libero Michelle Valliere (Lebanon).
Behind Mihalek (.600), Mullen (.350) and senior Ashley Adams (Mystic) (.467), Eastern attacked at .416 against Morrisville, and the team's 15 blocks played a role in the Mustangs' .034 attack percentage. Valliere (12) and Mihalek (11) combined for 23 digs and Sibiskie and Adams combined for ten block assists.
In five sets against Kean, Mihalek collected 22 kills with a .404 attack percentage, first-year junior Carly Balskus (Hebron) 13 kills and a .250 attack percentage, Adams nine kills, Sibiskie eight kills with a .304 attack percentage, and Mullen seven kills. Valliere led Eastern with 23 digs, Mihalek adding 14, Balskus and Sopneski 12 each. Sopneski was credited with 29 assists, junior Amanda Tourjee (Waterford) 23.
On the day, Mihalek led the Warriors with 35 points on 32 kills, two service aces and two block assists; Balskus 21 points on 19 kills and four block assists, Adams 20 points on 18 kills and four block assists, Sibiskie 17 points on 11 kills, ten block assists and an ace, and Mullen 17 points on 15 kills and four block assists. In eight sets, Valliere topped Eastern with 35 digs, Mihalek adding 25 and Sopneski 47 assists and 17 digs and Tourjee 35 assists and ten digs. Mihalek attacked at .456, Sibiskie at .345 and Balskus at .261.
Eastern hosts the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
