Box Score AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Junior first baseman D.J. Scavone (Auburn, MA) tied the program game record with three doubles and sophomore righty Cole Ogorzalek (Portland) pitched 3 2/3 relief innings for his first career win when the Eastern Connecticut State University baseball team defeated Endicott College, 8-5, Monday morning.
Eastern (2-0) scored four unearned runs in the first on two Endicott (2-1) errors, senior rightfielder Pat Sirois' (Cromwell) leadoff triple and subsequent RBI doubles by Scavone and freshman third baseman Drew Alexopoulos's (Hanson, MA) first career hit and RBI.
As the third of four Eastern pitchers, Ogorzalek took over in the sixth inning with a 7-3 lead and pitched into the ninth, when sophomore lefty Nick Rascati (Wallingford) retired the potential tying run with a game-ending ground ball to Alexopoulos at third for his fourth career saves.
As the first of seven Endicott pitchers making his first career start, freshman Joe Oriola was the tough-luck loser. Four of the five runs charged to the righty were unearned over his three-inning stint. He fanned seven of the 14 batters which his staff collected, allowing six hits and a walk.
After the four-run first, Eastern made it 5-0 in the third on Scavone's two-out RBI double. The Warriors tacked on another run in the fourth to make it 6-2 on a two-out walk by sophomore second baseman Ryan Hood (Arlington, MA), single by All-America senior captain Alex Zachary (Enfield) and balk. Eastern added single runs in the sixth on singles by Sirois and Hood and a failed pickoff attempt and in the eight on leadoff triple by junior substitute catcher Merlyn Herrera (La Yaquiza, DR) and Sirois' RBI double.
Scavone was 4-for-5 with two RBI and a run to highlight a 14-hit onslaught. Sirois followed Sunday's four-hit game with three hits, including a double and triple, scored two runs and drove in one.
In his eighth career appearance, Ogorzalek gave up four hits and a walk while fanning three and being charged with two (earned) runs.
The win is the third in as many decisions for Eastern over Endicott, which received votes in the most recent national poll and was coming off Sunday's 6-1 win over No. 6 Ramapo College.
Eastern faces Ripon College Tuesday at 9:45 a.m. at Auburndale.
