Box Score MANSFIELD, Conn. – Just when it seemed like it couldn't get any worse for the Eastern Connecticut State University men's lacrosse team, things got better. A lot better.
Trailing by three goals in the early minutes of the second half of a game where they were able to capitalize on only three of 25 shots (0-for-4 on man-up) to that point, the Warriors ended the game on a tear, scoring the final ten goals of the match and denying Mount Ida College (5-3) on its final ten shots over the last 28 minutes as Eastern ended a four-game losing streak with a 13-5 non-conference victory Saturday afternoon at the Mansfield Outdoor Complex.
The win is the sixth without a loss in the series for Eastern against Mount Ida, which is now 1-3 in its last four matches this year. The Warriors had lost their first two at home this season and were without a victory of any kind since a come-from-behind, 12-8 triumph at Farmingdale State three weeks ago.
Eastern, which held a 55-22 advantage in shots, tied the match 6-6 with 5:06 left in the third quarter on a goal by senior attack Shawn Tierney (Norwell, MA) -- who had missed the last two matches after re-injuring his knee -- and went ahead for good four minutes later on a strike by junior attack Matthew Rougeot (Cheshire) four minutes later.
Mount Ida had moved out to a 6-3 lead with a pair of goals two minutes apart less than three minutes into the second half, but could not find any relief against Eastern's defense the rest of the way. The visitors recorded ten shots without a strike over the final 27:36, with Eastern junior goalie Chris Gorman (Shrewsbury, MA) saving three. Five others went wide, one hit the post and one was blocked before reaching the game.
Of Eastern's ten straight goals over the final 24 minutes, Rougeot collected three, senior captain Nick Biasetti (Brookfield) two and junior midfielder Harrison Uruda (Milford, NH) chipped in two assists.
The Warriors scored six goals on 17 fourth-quarter shots, amassing a 32-13 advantage in shots over the final 30 minutes.
Rougeot finished with a career-high five goals, Tierney two goals and an assist and Biasetti two goals. First-year junior midfielder Anthony Buffafuoco (Somers) closed out the scoring in the final minutes with his first career goal on his first career shot..
Eastern senior midfielder Jesse Schulze won ten of 19 faceoffs for Eastern, his best outing since commanding 15 of 28 March 8 at Johnson & Wales University. Freshman midfielder Anthony Choronzy (Clinton) helped Eastern to a +10 advantage in ground balls by scopping up six, Schulze winning five, and in his first career start, freshman defenseman Ralph Criscuolo (Wallingford) collected four.
Mount Ida junior goalie Cam Hayward stopped 19 shots, 11 coming in the second half when he was bombarded by 32 shots.
Eastern hosts Roger Williams University Thursday at 4 p.m. in a makeup game from March 15.
