Box Score FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – The Eastern Connecticut State University men's lacrosse team outscored Farmingdale State College 8-1 to wipe out an early three-goal deficit and post a 12-8 non-conference win Sunday afternoon.
After scoring the final three goals of the second quarter to tie the game at halftime, Eastern (2-1) scored five straight goals in the third quarter – the first two by freshmen Ed Moran (West Haven) and Samuel Watson (Trumbull) and two by junior Matthew Rougeot (Cheshire). Moran's strike tied with 8:30 left in the third quarter tied the game at 5-all and Watson put the Warriors ahead for good when he took a feed from senior Jesse Schulze (Croton-on-Hudson, NY), who won the faceoff 12 seconds after Moran's tying goal.
Eastern's man-up unit connected for goals on three of five extra-man situations – including Rougeot's second goal of the third quarter that made it 9-5 with five minutes left in the third quarter – and the man-down group kept Farmingdale (2-1) off the board on six extra-man tries. The man-down until stopped Farmingdale on four man-up opportunities when the Rams threated to pull away after building a 4-1 lead five minutes into the second quarter.
Freshman attack RyanWieczorek of Farmingdale, who scored ten of his team's 39 goals in its first two wins, managed but two assists and no goals on five shots against Eastern senior defender Nick Groccia (New Milford). Eastern junior Chris Gorman (Shrewsbury, MA) stopped 14 shots to record his second win in three starts, limiting the Rams to one goal over a stretch of 17 minutes spanning the second and third quarters.
Schulze won 12 of 22 faceoffs, including seven of eight to set up the five-goal third quarter.
Rougeot led Eastern with four goals and an assist, Watson scoring three with an assist, junior Harrison Urda (Milford, NH) a goal and three assists and senior Shawn Tierney (Norwell, MA) two goals and an assist. Urda led the Warriors with six ground balls, Rougeot picking up five and Watson four.
Eastern visits Johnson & Wales University Wednesday at 4 p.m.
