Box Score GORHAM, Maine – Junior goalie Chris Gorman (Shrewsbury, MA) made ten saves and allowed only one goal in the first quarter when the University of Southern Maine unloaded 21 shots as the Eastern Connecticut State University men's lacrosse team recorded a 13-7 Little East Conference victory Tuesday afternoon at Hannaford Field.
Southern Maine (4-5, 1-1 LEC) managed to get only seven of its 55 shots past Gorman, who made 17 saves and never allowed the Huskies to score as many as two goals in a row.
Eastern senior Jesse Schulze (Croton-on-Hudson, NY) won the first nine faceoffs of the game and 15 of 19 in all, and the Warriors took the lead for good, 2-1, when Schulze won the opening faceoff of the second quarter and took it in himself.
Winners of three of its last four, Eastern (5-6, 2-0 LEC) led 7-3 at halftime, scoring six times in the second quarter on 17 shots. The hosts outshot Eastern, 55-44, in the match.
Eastern's man-down defense killed off nine of 11 of USM's man-up opportunities in a game which featured 21 penalties and 17:30 worth of penalty minutes.
Eight players contributed at least one goal for Eastern, with junior attack Matthew Rougeot (Cheshire) and freshman midfielder Ed Moran (West Haven) each potting three and freshman attack Samuel Watson (Trumbull) chipping in three assists.
Schulze won seven ground balls and freshman midfielder Anthony Choronzy (Clinton) five.
Eastern hosts Plymouth State University Saturday at 2 p.m. in a Little East Conference match.
