Baseball: Roger Williams Overcomes the Odds, Routs Warriors in Non-Conference Game

Box Score

BRISTOL, R.I. – A history of futility against the Eastern Connecticut State University baseball team and a sub-.500 record this year did nothing to discourage Roger Williams University from pinning a 10-1 loss on the Warriors in a non-conference game Sunday afternoon.

Having lost ten times in 11 previous tries against Eastern (10-7) in the all-time series – including 8-0 a year ago at the Eastern Baseball Stadium -- Roger Williams (9-15) parlayed 12 hits – four for extra bases – six walks, two hit batsmen, two errors, two wild pitches, and a passed ball off five Eastern pitchers to win its third straight and send the Warriors to their third loss in two days. The Hawks have scored 26 runs in their last three wins and Eastern has commited ten errors in its three losses.

In non-conference games which have become increasingly meaningless as teams save their front-line pitchers for important weekend conference competition, the Warriors scored an unearned run in the second inning  before junior lefty starter Sam Bennett (2-1) and senior righty reliever Jimmy Hamilton shut them out the rest of the way. Nine of Eastern's ten hits were singles and the pair fanned nine with just one walk each.

Leading 5-1, the hosts ran away with it by batting around in the eighth and scoring five runs on five hits (including a triple and double), two walks, a wild pitch and an error.

Sophomore shortstop and leadoff hitter Cory Baldwin (Cromwell) had his second four-hit game of the season to raise his batting average 59 percentage points to .314, but was the only hitter with more than one hit. Junior first baseman D.J. Scavone (Auburn, MA) drove in the team's only run with a second-inning double to pull to within one of his 100th career hit and has reached base in a team-high 12 straight games.

Senior All-America centerfielder Alex Zachary (Enfield) failed to reach base for the first time in 37 games, grounding out, flying out and striking out twice.

Eastern hosts Suffolk University Wednesday at 4 p.m. at the Eastern Baseball Stadium.
