MANSFIELD, Conn. – The Eastern Connecticut State University baseball team (15-6-1) suffered a 12-5 defeat at the hands of Stevens Institute of Technology (16-12) Wednesday afternoon at Holowaty Family Field. This is Eastern's second-ever loss against the Ducks, previously losing when the teams met in the 2010 season. The Warriors committed six errors and six of the twelve runs from the Ducks were unearned.
The Ducks struck first in the top of the first, scoring two runs off
Jake Shaughnessy (Franklin, MA). Despite two errors in the opening inning, Shaughnessy exited the game with the Warriors in the lead, allowing just three hits and striking out nine in four innings of work. He walked three and his two runs allowed in the first were both unearned.
Three walks out of the first five batters of the second inning allowed Eastern to load the bases with two outs.
Hank Penders (Wethersfield) hit a three run double to right center to regain the advantage and give the Warriors a one run lead at 3-2. Ryan Ciesla replaced Dean Qira on the mound after Eastern dropped back-to-back bunts to start the bottom of the third. Ciesla gave up a sac fly to
Ian Moser (Bellingham, MA) and the Warriors took their largest lead of the game at 4-2.
Stevens Tech accumulated four hits in the top of the fifth inning and scored four runs to retake the lead, 6-4. Quinton Sterling was at the heart of the action with a single, steal, and run as part of his 4-6 day with two RBIs. The Ducks added a few more runs in the sixth, scoring another run from an error but stranding a runner at third. Ciesla exited the game without allowing a hit in 3.0 innings and striking out two batters as he earned his first win of the season.
An RBI single from leadoff hitter
Matthew Carrera (Mount Sinai, NY) brought
Sean Fallon (Bethel) home in the bottom of the eighth that gave Eastern a consolation run to cut the Ducks' lead to five. Similar to the fifth, Sterling singled and scored as Stevens Tech eased to a seven-run win over Eastern.
The Warriors will return to Little East Conference action this Saturday for a doubleheader against Rhode Island College at Holowaty Family Field starting at noon. Coming off a 17-23 season (8-8 LEC), the Anchormen have struggled in 2026, holding a record of 2-15 (1-7 LEC) with games to play on Wednesday and Thursday.
Last season, the teams met four times and Eastern held the 3-1 advantage. Rhode Island College earned its lone win against the Warriors in 2025 during the LEC Tournament, defeating the Warriors 12-2 in a seven-inning game on May 8 in Rindge, NH. Eastern got its revenge on May 10, defeating the Anchormen 13-3 in eight innings, before falling to Keene State in a 2-1 loss the following day.
