Baseball: Three-Run First Inning Helps Barlovic (6 Innings/2 Runs) Gain First Win

Box Score
MANSFIELD, Conn. – The Eastern Connecticut State University Baseball Team (15-5-1) defeated in-state opponents Trinity College (14-6) by a score of 7-4 on Tuesday evening at Holowaty Family Field. The Warriors move to 14-7 at home all-time against the Bantams and 9-5 since moving to the newly named Holowaty Family Field at the Eastern Baseball Stadium in 1998.

Joseph Barlovic (Bergenfield, NJ) was given the start for the Warriors and retired the first eight Bantams he faced. Striking out four of his first six, Barlovic allowed the first Trinity hit to Pete Beisel, who doubled in the top of the third. Barlovic finished the game with six innings pitched, six strikeouts, five hits, and two runs allowed, earning his first career win.

On the mound for Trinity, Luke Shalkham was named a starter for the first time in his career. The Warrior offense scored three runs in the bottom of the first on just two hits to give themselves an early 3-0 lead. Shalkham was charged with two earned runs and completed an additional two innings of work, keeping the Warriors off the scoresheet in the bottom of the second and third.

Matthew Limongelli came into the game for the Bantams and gave up a walk and two hits before being struck by a hard-hit ball up the middle from Matthew Carrera (Mount Sinai, NY). Cameron Forte (Easton) scored on the play and Carrera earned another RBI on the season, boosting the Warrior advantage to 4-0.

Having doubled in his first at-bat, Beisel led off the top of the sixth inning with a triple to right center, giving the Bantams a runner in scoring position with no outs. Tyler Bernstein dropped an RBI bunt that scored Beisel and allowed himself to get on base. Bernstein would make a trip around the bases to score and make it 4-2 after 5.5 innings played. A two-run home run from Hank Penders (Wethersfield) replenished the four-run lead in the bottom of the inning.

Ian Moser (Bellingham, MA) hit an RBI double to left field to make it 7-2 in the seventh inning and back up AJ Rooks (Coventry) who replaced Barlovic on the mound. After a strong two innings, Rooks gave up four hits in the top of the ninth and two Bantams were able to score. Nicholas Furino (East Haven) was able to retire the final two in just seven pitches and put the Warriors back in the win column heading into tomorrow.

The Warriors will host Stevens Tech tomorrow at 4 p.m. for their 8th meeting all time, dating back to 2006. Eastern owns a 6-1 lead all-time. The Warriors have won their last two games against Stevens Tech, losing only in the 2010 season.

Last year, the teams met at Dobbelaar Baseball Field in Hoboken, NJ. The Warriors defeated the Ducks 11-2 in a game they trailed 2-0 heading into the fifth inning. Penders and Teige Kimbler (Albany, NY) both hit three-run home runs to give the Warriors their ninth win in the last ten games at that point of the 2025 season.

Stevens Tech is coming off a 7-4 loss against the University of Hartford on Monday, an opponent the Warriors tied 12-12 in an 8-inning game on April 1.
