Men's Soccer: Warriors Scoreless Minutes Streak at 288 After Third Straight Shutout Win

Box Score

WILLIMANTIC, Conn.—The Eastern Connecticut State University men's soccer team extended its unscored upon streak to 288 minutes by posting its third straight home shutout in a 2-0 non-conference victory over Anna Maria College Wednesday afternoon at Thomas Nevers Field.

The shutout is the third straight by a 2-0 score at home in a week for Eastern (4-1-0), which has given upon only one goal this year – that coming with 18 minutes left in a 1-0 setback to SUNY Cortland ten days ago.

All-conference junior keeper Ryan Murphy (Cromwell) started his third straight shutout in goal for Eastern, giving way to freshman Kyle Boutot (Tolland) with 6:30 left after the Warriors were finally able to add an insurance goal two minutes earlier. Murphy, who needed only one save, has not allowed a goal since the Cortland game – which is the only goal that he has allowed this year -- lowering his goals-against average to 0.20. In his debut, Boutot was not called upon for a save.

Senior forward Justin Grant's (Cromwell) first goal of the year with 14 minutes gone lifted Eastern into a 1-0 lead, but despite dominating with a final shot advantage of 19-3, the Warriors could not widen their margin until senior forward Adam Traxler (Newburyport, MA) scored his second goal of the season inside the final ten minutes.

Senior midfielder JD Stearns (Bolton) began the scoring drive on the first goal. He carried before laying off to sophomore forward Griffin Luczek (Lee, NH), who cut into the box and crossed the ball from the right side to Grant, who boomed a 12-yarder from the left side of the box past keeper Jeffre Donahue.

Sophomore forward Sam Hurlburt's (Cornwall) perfect line-drive cross from the right side found Traxler unmarked at the left post, and he volleyed it hard past Donahue from close range.

Eastern hosts Rhode Island College in its Little East Conference opener Saturday at noon at Nevers Field.
