Box Score MANSFIELD, Conn. – Freshman McKenzie Cormier stopped three shots to record a shutout in her first career start and gain her first career win, and sophomore Maggie Redman (Alfred, ME) scored her first career goal early in the second half to lift the University of Southern Maine to a 1-0 Little East Conference victory over Eastern Connecticut State University Saturday afternoon at the Mansfield Outdoor Complex.
Losing its third one-goal decision this year and second straight by 1-0, Eastern (1-4, 1-2 LEC) outshot Southern Maine (2-4, 1-1 LEC) 9-6 and had a 9-4 advantage in penalty corners but lost for the 17th time in 21 matches in this series. USM has won three of the last four, all by one goal.
Redman was credited with her first career goal on her only shot of the match, converting a feed from junior Brooke Dugan (Thomaston, ME) with just under 11 minutes gone in the second half.
The Warriors came up empty despite owning the final17 minutes. In that final stretch, Eastern collected four of its penalty corners and five of its six second-period shots. Cormier made two saves, sophomore back Lili Kien was credited with a defensive saves, a shot by junior Stephanie Hogan (Northford) hit the post and a shot by sophomore Lindsey McKeon (Chester) went wide.
Eastern senior goalie Maddie LaRusso (Enfield) made two saves and lowered her goals-against average to 2.26.
Eastern visits Westfield State University Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the second of five straight conference matches.
