Field Hockey:In LEC, Owls' Frosh Goalie Denies Warriors' Solid Offense (18 Shots)

Box Score

WESTFIELD, Mass. – The Eastern Connecticut State University field hockey team outshot Westfield State University by a wide margin, but the Owls capitalized on one of their five shots with 14 minutes left and went on to a 1-0 Little East Conference victory Tuesday night at Alumni Field.

Still unbeaten and unscored-upon in the conference, Westfield (3-3, 3-0 LEC) got ten saves from freshman goalie Molly Duff-Still to defeat the Warriors for the 11th time in the last 14 contests in the series and drop Eastern (1-5, 1-3 LEC) to its third straight 1-0 loss in a week.

Junior Carly Zona ended 56 scoreless minutes with her first goal of the season. The goal came after Eastern senior goalie Maddie LaRusso (Enfield) stopped a bid by Westfield sophomore Cora Rogers, but Zona was there for the rebound goal.

Eastern outshot the Owls, 18-5, with senior Tia Lafrance Boyce (Pawcatuck) and sophomore Khiara Valentine (Morristown, NJ) combining for nine shots, forcing Duff-Still to turn aside seven of them to preserve her second shutout in four career starts. LaRusso was credited with four saves.

Eastern hosts Framingham State University in a conference match Saturday at noon at the Mansfield Outdoor Complex. Since losing 1-0 in 2011, Eastern has posted five straight shutouts over the Rams, outscoring them, 11-0.
