Women's Volleyball: Warriors Tune Up with 4th Straight Win; Difficult Opponents Ahead

Box Score

QUINCY, Mass. -- Freshman outside Abby Stern (Manchester), last week's Little East Conference Rookie-of-the-Week, had game-highs of 11 kills, a .409 attack percentage, and 14 digs, and senior outside Carly Balskus (Hebron) added six kills with a .312 attack percentage as the Eastern Connecticut State University women's volleyball team swept its fourth straight opponent this year, Eastern Nazarene College, Tuesday night at the Lahue Physical Education Center. Scores were 25-10, 25-12, 25-19.

Junior setter Leah Sopneski (Deep River) contributed 13 assists, four service aces and 12 digs, while freshman Alaetra Long (Lincoln, NE) had eight kills, ten digs and three block assists as the Warriors defeated Eastern Nazarene (3-2) for the tenth straight time.

Eastern (4-0) attacked at .431 in the two easy first-set wins before clearing the bench in the third set, when freshman Sydney Chomicz (Clinton) tied the match, 13-13, on a set from sophomore Mckenzie Maneggia (Andover) to start a run of six straight points. Long then contributed consecutive kills before the hosts made three consecutive errors as the Warriors pulled away.

Sophomore Courtney McCarthy led ENC with ten kills and freshman Jenna Meacham totalled 11 digs and senior Kayla Dean added 21 assists.

Eastern embarks upon a difficult stretch beginning Friday when it visits Trinity College 7 p.m. in the first of three matches in two days at the Trinity College Invitational, then meets Clark University and Westfield State University Saturday. The Warriors swept Trinity last year to end an 11-match losing streak at the hands of the Bantams. Eastern holds a 25-12 series lead over Clark, but has not beaten the Cougars since 2011, a run of six straight losses. The Warriors bring a 15-0 record all-time against Westfield State before returning home for difficult meetings with Roger Williams (having lost the last three times the teams have met) and Little East Conference rival Keene State College. The Warriors came from two sets back to upend the Owls on their home court last year to claim a first-round LEC playoff home match, where the Warriors then swept the Owls to advance to the tournament semifinals.
