Baseball: Salve Breaks Tie With Two Sixth-Inning Runs in 7-5 Win Over Warriors

Box Score

LAKELAND, Fla. – The Salve Regina University baseball team erased an early three-run deficit and broke a tie with the go-ahead runs ini the bottom of the sixth inning in a 7-5 win over Eastern Connecticut State University Tuesday afternoon at Henley Field.

Eastern (2-1) led 5-4 after scoring twice in the top of the fifth, but Salve (4-2) tied the game with an unearned run in the bottom of the inning on a two-out, run-scoring single by Sam Brito, then moved ahead with what proved to be the winning runs in the sixth on two hits, a walk and hit batsmen.

Eastern put runners aboard in the seventh and eighth on two-out singles by pinch hitter William Coleman (Northford) in the seventh and junior Ryan Hood (Arlington, MA) in the eighth without putting any runs across, then loaded the bases in the top of the ninth on a leadoff double by junior Alex Parkos (Meriden), outfield error and walk to Coleman before Will Ginsberg fanned his third and fourth batters in his three-inning stint to preserve the win and record his first save.

Coming off a 13-inning win late Monday night against Ramapo College, Eastern used three pitchers against No. 24 Salve with a combined 1 1/3 innings of varsity experience. Freshman righty Matt Curtis (Tolland) allowed four earned runs over the first five innings in his first career appearance, with sophomore righty Jared Buckley (Oxford, MA) working the sixth and sophomore righty Jack Risley (Willimantic) fanning two and allowing two hits over the final two innings.

Hood, freshman Anthony Stigler (Mansfield) and Parkos – batting 1-2-3 in the order – each had two hits and a run scored, with Stigler and Parkos each driving in a run.

Salve commited three errorrs which accounted for an unearned Eastern run, but the Seahawks collected 14 hits. No. 3 hitter Alex Perry was 4-for-4 with three RBI. Perry cut into Eastern's early 3-0 lead with an RBI double in the third and drove in two runs with a single in the fourth which vaulted Salve into a 4-3 lead. Eastern re-claimed the lead with two runs in the fifth on bases-loaded walks to freshmen Jack Rich (Meriden) and Kevin Murphy (Springfield, MA) but left the bases loaded when winning pitcher Tommy Seaver got a strikeout and line out prevent further damage.

Eastern faces Springfield College Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at Auburndale.
