Baseball: Parkos Powers Warriors Past Albertus for Sixth Win in Last Seven Games

Box Score

MANSFIELD, Conn. – Freshman righty Nicholas Kraszewski (East Haven) threw five shutout innings and juniors Alex Parkos (Meriden) and Alexander White (West Hartford) launched eighth-inning home runs as the Eastern Connecticut State University baseball team pulled away for a 7-1 non-conference victory over Albertus Magnus College Thursday afternoon at the Eastern Baseball Stadium.

In his third start, Kraszewski (2-0) allowed three singles and left on the long end of a 4-0 lead. Three relievers combined to pitch the final four innings, giving up one run on four hits as Eastern (9-5) won its 11th straight against Albertus (4-10) in the 11-game series.

Eastern has won six of seven and improved to 5-1 up north.

Albertus stranded two runners in each of the first three innings – 14 all told – which helped the Warriors build a 4-0 lead after three innings. Eastern opened the first inning with an unearned run on an inning-opening infield error and Parkos' sacrifice fly, then strung together four hits to score three times in the third on RBI hits by junior Ryan Hood (Arlington, MA), sophomore Jake LeFevre (Mansfield Center) and Parkos.

In the three-run eighth, LeFevre opened with a single before Parkos unloded his third home run of the season, and with one, White blasted his first of the season to close out the scoring.

Parkos had two hits and four RBI in hitting safely in his eighth straight game and improving his team-leading batting average to .380. He leads the team with six multi-hit and six multi-RBI games. LeFevre also had two hits and scored two runs.

At left: Alexander White (left) is greeted by Ryan Hood (10) after belting his first home run of the season -- a solo blast in the eighth -- which wrapped up the 7-1 victory over Albertus Magnus Thursday.

Sophomore righty Drew Alexopoulos (Hanson, MA) and junior lefty Nick Rascati (Wallingford) limited the Falcons to one hit over the final 2 2/3 innings. The combined to throw 25 of their 37 pitches for strikes.

Albertus senior righty Dan Zarnik allowed only four hits and one walk but was replaced to start the fifth with Eastern leading, 4-0. He threw 41 of his 60 pitches for strikes.

Late-inning replacement Mike Browne came off the bench to go 2-for-2 and scored his team's run in the seventh. Justen Rodriguez also had two hits for Albertus, which has lost four straight.

Eastern played perfect defense for the fifth straight game and seventh time this year, improving its season percentage to .975

Eastern plays the sixth and seventh games in a 12-game home stand Saturday when it opens its Little East Conference season at noon against defending LEC tournament champion UMass Boston. The Beacons are ranked No. 1 in New England and No. 5 nationally.
