Men's Lacrosse: Warriors Rise From the Ashes, Rally for Seniors' Day Overtime Win

Box Score

MANSFIELD, Conn. --  Matthew Rougeot and Harrison Urda scored goals a minute apart inside the final 69 seconds to force overtime, and Urda ended it 63 seconds into overtime as the Eastern Connecticut State University men's lacrosse team used a fourth-quarter rally to subdue Plymouth State University, 11-10, in a Little East Conference Seniors' Day match Saturday afternoon at the Mansfield Outdoor Complex. The victory followed the Eastern women's lacrosse's 14-13 overtime Seniors' Day victory over Keene State College on the same field.

Plymouth State (6-8, 3-2 LEC) scored seven unanswered goals to move out to a four-goal, 9-5 lead after three quarters, but Eastern (7-6, 3-2 LEC) battled back to outscore the Panthers 5-1 over the final 12 minutes to force overtime.

With Eastern trailing 10-8 after Chris Waterbury scored his third goal of the second half with 1:45 left, Matt Robidoux proceeded to win the next three faceoffs. Trevor Ross gained control of the first faceoff and Rougeot potted his 20th of the season to make it 10-9 with 69 seconds left. Anthony Choronzy picked up the ground ball to ensure the next faceoff win, and after Rougeot's attempt sailed wide, Urda nailed his 28th of the season with 14 seconds left in regulation.

Kyle Stockman won the overtime faceoff for Plymouth, the ground ball picked up by Sam McCoy, but Eastern goalie Chris Gorman gave the Warriors the only chance they needed after making his 13th and final save on Casey Elkins' bid with just under a minute gone in sudden death. Urda's initial shot on the possession was saved by Zel Kerkel but he got another opportunity off a pass from Connor Wyllie and made it count 63 seconds into overtime.

Urda finished with four goals and two assists, Rougeot three goals and an assist. Robidoux won nine of 14 faceoffs. Ross picked up six ground balls and Anthony Choronzy and Ralph Criscuolo three each.

Kerkel was credited with 14 saves for Plymouth, six coming when Eastern unloaded 17 fourth-quarter shots and scored five times.  Stockman was 11-of-24 from the faceoff X and Charlie Harrington won six ground balls.

The outcome marked the third time in the last four meetings that one goal has separated the teams, the team's splitting the first two decisions.

Eastern hosts UMass Dartmouth Tuesday at 5 p.m. before closing out the conference regular season Friday at Salem State University.
