Maritime's Depth Dooms Warriors, Who are Limited to Two Second-Half Goals

Box Score

MANSFIELD, Conn. – The Eastern Connecticut State University men's lacrosse team went 16 minutes between goals in dropping its fourth straight, 14-6, to Maritime College Wednesday evening at Rick McCarthy Field.

With 25 reserves supporting the starting cast for Maritime (6-2) – as opposed to ten for Eastern (2-4) – the Privateers wore down the Warriors. Maritime allowed only two second-half goals, pulling away from a 9-4 halftime lead.

Eastern scored the final two goals n the last three minutes of the first half – both by sophomore Jake Liebowitz (Trumbull) – to narrow the halftime gap to five goals, but Maritime got them back in the third quarter to go up, 11-4. Liebowitz and junior Jacob Testa (Southington) provided Eastern with its  only  two goals of the second half, with Testa assisting on Liebowitz' and Testa netting an unassisted goal with just over four minutes left.

Bright spots for Eastern included a winning margin in faceoffs for only the second time this year, and playing without a penalty for the first time this year (and perhaps in program history).  Sophomore Tyler Stein (Milford) won 12 of 23 faceoffs against a pair of Maritime faceoff midfielders and the Warriors' man-down defense enjoyed a night off.

By scoring four of the team's goals, Liebowitz took over the team lead in points, with 17. Stein picked up a team-high six ground balls on his faceoff wins and junior Anthony Choronzy (Clinton) followed with five and freshman Jack Lombardo (Berlin) four.

Junior Jack Farrell (Stratford) stopped 12 shots in net.

Matt DeMeo and Mike Leake combined for nine goals and three assists for Maritime, which outshot Eastern, 42-35.

Eastern looks for its first home win Saturday when it hosts the University of  in its Little East Conference opener at 3 p.m. The Warriors are 19-0 all-time against the Huskies.
