Warriors Help Themselves (16 hits), Get Help (5 Unearned Runs) To Dump Dean

Box Score

FRANKLIN, Mass. – Sophomore DH Jack Rich (Meriden) drove in three runs with three run-scoring singles and sophomore righty reliever Bryan Albee (Killiingly) won his first game as the Eastern Connecticut State University baseball team downed Dean College, 13-5, Wednesday afternoon at Longley Field.

Rich had a bases-clearing single in the second inning when Eastern (12-11) wiped out a two-run deficit on seven hits (six straight to open the inning) and with the help of a Dean (8-14) error and passed ball to score five runs, three of them unearned.

Appearing in his first game since opening the season as the starting rightfielder, junior Drew Alexopoulos (Hansen, MA) drove in his first two runs of the season with his first extra-base hit – a pinch double in a three-run eighth inning. Alexopoulos also made his first pitching appearance of the season, fanning the final three batters of the game after the first two reached on an error  and a hit.

Eastern pounded out 16 hits, three of them doubles in addition to a second-inning RBI triple by senior rightfielder Ryan Hood (Arlington, MA).

Junior centerfielder Jake LeFevre (Mansfield Center) came off the bench to drive in two runs with a single and sacrifice fly, and freshman catcher and cleanup hitter Matt Malcom (East Lyme) reached four times with two singles, a walk and error, and scored three times. Senior first baseman Alex Parkos (Meriden) also reached four times with a second-inning RBI single, two walks and a hit-by-pitch, and scored three times. Freshman first baseman Jay Bonilla (Miches, D.R.) contributed his first hit and scored his first run with a pinch double ahead of Alexopooulos' two-run pinch double in the eighth.

Appearing in his 13th career game -- 12th in relief --Albee pitched two scoreless innings to earn his first decision as the second of seven Eastern pitchers. Albee retired the first five batters he faced before giving up his only hit. He stranded the runner on first with an inning-ending strikeout. Junior righty starter Jared Buckley (Oxford, MA) fanned two, walked three and gave up two earned runs on four hits before giving way to Albee. Junior righties Sam Gagnon (Andover) and Brian Hnatuk (Trumbull) and Alexopoulos all tossed a scoreless inning.

Seven pitchers combined to strike out 13 and walk seven.

Eastern visits defending Little East Conference regular-season and tournament champion Massachusetts Boston Saturday at noon.
