Men's Lacrosse: In Defensive Standoff, Warriors Push Through in Second Half for Win

Box Score

MANSFIELD, Conn. – The Eastern Connecticut State University men's lacrosse team kept Anna Maria College off the board for the first 38 minutes and scored three extra-man goals in the second half on the way to an 8-2 non-conference victory Tuesday afternoon at Rick McCarthy Field.

Anna Maria (5-10)  senior goalie Paul Schwarz collected 22 saves to keep the Amcats in contention throughout much of the game, however, with nine of the stops coming in a scoreless second quarter.

With Eastern (5-7) leading just 2-0 at halftime – when Schwarz made ten saves on 20 Eastern shots -- senior attack Matthew Rougeot (Cheshire) and Anna Maria  junior attack Brandon Pavoni scored 23 seconds apart before the Warriors took control by holding the Amcats scoreless until a minute remained in the game, and running off five straight goals – three of them on man-up opportunities by junior midfielder Wes Thompson (Watertown), junior midfielder Anthony Choronzy (Clinton) and sophomore attack Jake Liebowitz (Trumbull), the latter two extra-man goals coming less than three minutes apart in the fourth quarter.

Junior goalie Jack Farrell (Stratford) made six saves in the first half to gain the win, then chipped in with his first career goal midway though the fourth quarter. Sophomore goalie John Funk (Southbury) made seven saves in the second half for the Warriors.

Rougeot had a hand in six of Eastern's goal by scoring three and assisting on three, with Thompson scoring twice. Sophomore midfielder Tyler Stein (Milford) was 7-of-10 from the faceoff X to up his season percentage to .474, winning five of those tries by himself with ground balls. Senior defenseman Trevor Ross (Stratford), sophomore defenseman Dominic Biasetti (Brookfield) and  junior midfieldler Jacob Testa (Attleboro, MA) all had four ground balls as the Warriors nearly doubled Anna Maria's ground ball (37-19). Ross also caused four turnovers.

Eastern outshot the Amcats, 42-22.

Eastern, now 3-3 at home, visits Massachusetts Dartmouth Tuesday at 7 p.m. in a Little East Conference match.
