Baseball: One Bad Inning and 13 Stranded Baserunners Sink Warriors, Who are Limited to One Run After First Inning in Non-Conference Loss to Bantams

Box Score

HARTFORD, Conn. – The Trinity College baseball team used an inning-opening error in the sixth inning to push across all five of its runs on four hits in a 5-3 non-conference victory over Eastern Connecticut State University Saturday afternoon at Murren/DiBenedetto Field.

First-year Eastern (2-1) senior righty Josh Vincent (New London) took a two-hit 2-0 shutout with six strikeouts into the sixth before Trinity (1-0) scored five runs on four hits and two errors to chase Vincent in favor of  junior righty Bryan Albee (Killingly).

Three hits, two stolen bases and a hit-by-pitch followed the inning-opening error before Vincent (1-1) was lifted. Albee allowed an RBI single but struck out the side to prevent further damage. Freshman righty Nathan Furino (East Haven) shut out Trinity without a hit over the final two innings, and the Warriors got one (unearned) run back in the eighth before Trinity turned an around-the-horn game-ending double play in the ninth.

Eastern staked Vincent to a 2-0 lead in the first by scoring two unearned runs on an opening error, walk, hit-by-pitch and single by senior DH Drew Alexopoulos (Hanson, MA) off sophomore righty Cameron Crowley.

Eastern had eight hits, seven walks and a hit batter but stranded 13, leaving the bases loaded in the second against Crowley and fifth against junior righty Justin Olson (1-0). Leading 2-0 in the second, junior first baseman Holden White (Wallingford) and junior centerfielder Ryan Bagdasarian (Glastonbury) singled around a walk to freshman No. 9 hitter Brent Cosculluela (Miami, FL), but Crowley got an infield pop and ground ball to end the threat.

Olson walked the first two batters after taking over to start the fifth. With two out, sophomore catcher Matt Malcom (East Lyme) singled to load the bases but Olson got an inning-ending ground ball to keep the game at 2-0.

Batting 2-3 in the lineup, junior rightfielder Jack Rich (Meriden) and junior leftfielder John Mesagno (Tappan, NY) each reached four times. Rich had two hits and two walks and Mesagno three walks and a hit-by-pitch. Malcom had two hits.

Olson pitched two scoreless innings for the win and sophomore righty Jimmy Fahey earned a three-inning save. He gave up only an unearned run in the eighth on three hits. He struck out and walked two.

Vincent fanned six with just one walk and allowed six hits. Furino has not allowed a run in 4 1/3 innings in two relief appearances this season.

The loss is only Eastern's third in the last ten games against Trinity.

The Warriors visit Purchase College for a non-conference doubleheader Sunday at 11 a.m.
