Box Score 2 PURCHASE, N.Y. -- Six pitchers allowed only two earned runs and struck out 19 and sophomore shortstop Owen Marica (Haddam) had six hits on the day and junior rightfielder Jack Rich (Meriden) was 4-for-4 with two doubles in the nightcap to lift the Eastern Connecticut State University baseball team to 6-2, 4-1 seven-inning victories over Purchase College Sunday afternoon.
Eastern (4-1) collected 22 hits – eight of them for extra bases – and junior righty Zach Player (East Hampton) and freshman righty Billy Oldham (Brookfield) earned pitching wins and senior righty John Parker (Brunswick, ME) gained his first career save. Player (1-0) pitched a two-hitter with six strikeouts over the first five innings of the first game, and Oldham (2-) fanned four in two innings of middle relief in the second game. Parker closed out the second-game victory by fanning the side in the seventh.
Eastern scored three times in the top of the fifth inning of the nightcap to break a 1-1 tie. Rich chased Purchase starter Nicholas Torres by doubling to open the fifth and senior DH Drew Alexopoulos (Hanson, MA) and Marica followed with bunt RBI singles to make it 3-1 before sophomore second baseman Noah Plantamuro (Bristol) stroked a single through the left side to make it 4-1. The RBI was the first of the year for Alexopoulos.
Twelve players contributed a hit and/or run for Eastern, now 5-0 in the all-time series with Purchase (3-8).
In two games, Marica was 6-of-7 with a double, three RBI and a run scored; Rich had four hits, including two doubles, and scored once, and junior utility player Luke Broadhurst (Stafford) had three hits, scored a run and rove in a run Sophomore first baseman Dean Slavin (Tappan, NY) doubled and homered in the first game. His home run led off the sixth and gave Eastern a 5-0 lead.
Marica improved his team-leading batting average to .632 (12-of-19) and Rich upped his to .474 (9-of-19), with the team batting average now at .333 and the pitching ERA at 2.47.
Eastern visits Clark University Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. in a non-conference game before opening its nine-game Florida trip Sunday against Johns Hopkins University at Fort Myers.
