Men's Lacrosse: On Seniors' Day, Warriors Handle Huskies to Even Record

MANSFIELD, Conn. – Senior Tyler Stein (Milford) and freshman David Harrold (Southington)  combined to win 19 of 24 faceoffs and 12 players contributed a goal or assist in Eastern Connecticut State University's 21-5 Little East Conference men's lacrosse victory over the University of Southern Maine Saturday afternoon on Seniors' Day at Rick McCarthy Field.
 
Eastern (5-5, 2-3 LEC) got goals from eight different players in racing to a 13-0 lead with six minutes left in the first half in snapping a four-game losing streak and went on to its 21st straight win in the series.
 
Southern Maine (1-7, 0-5 LEC) senior Tristan Dundas got the Huskies on the board with four minutes left in the first half with his team-leading 20th goal of the season but the team's top scorer was limited to that one goal on two total shots.
 
The LEC leader in faceoff percentage, Stein improved his season mark to .692 in winning eight of nine at the faceoff X, and picked up eight ground balls. Harrold was credited with winning a season-high 11 faceoffs and won seven ground balls to improve his season percentage to.633.
 
Sophomore defenseman Domenic Scarano (Berlin) caused four of USM's 23 turnovers and also picked up six of Eastern's 53 ground ball – its highest total since the opening match of the season.
 
Stein equaled his career high with five goals and set a career high with six points, while  freshman Zacharie Appolon (Stamford) had three goals and three assists, senior Jake Liebowitz (Trumbull) three goals and an assist, senior Kyle Cardoza (Waterford) three goals and junior Payten Nevins (Hamden) chipped in three assists.
 
Graduate student Jack Farrell (Stratford) made five saves in the first half to even his season record at 5-5 and his career record at 14-14. Senior John Funk Southbury) made five saves in relief of Farrell and freshman Nick Collazo (Park Ridge, NJ) closed out the win, playing the final 6:27 in his debut.

Senior Joe Cullinan picked up seven ground balls for the Huskie and freshman starting goalie Ethan Ford made seven saves in 30 minutes in his debut.
 
Eastern's seven graduating seniors and Farrell were recognized on Seniors' Day after playing the final regular-season home games of their careers. Joining Farrell, Cardoza, Funk, Liebowitz and Stein were Tyler Koppy (Attleboro, MA), Michael Parker (Colchester) and Matt Robidoux (Cheshire). Koppy won three ground balls, caused two turnovers and contributed an assist in the game while Parker was 2-for-4 from the faceoff X, won two ground balls and caused a turnover.
 
Eastern closes out the regular season Wednesday at Castleton University at 4 p.m. in a conference contest.
