MANSFIELD, Conn. – Five innings was all it took for the high-powered Eastern Connecticut State University Softball offense to get wins in both games of their doubleheader at Clyde Washburne Field on Tuesday afternoon against Little East Conference rival Keene State College.
Winning by final scores of 10-1 and 16-0, the Warriors' (26-4, 9-1 LEC) offense was led by senior first baseman
Brooke Matyasovsky (Orange) whose first-inning three-run home run that got Eastern on the scoreboard early in game one, led to a 2-for-4 afternoon for the powerful right-handed hitter with six RBIs. Graduate outfielder
Alexis Tyrrell (Torrington) went a perfect 5-for-5 in the doubleheader with a triple, solo home run, a stolen base, two RBIs, and four runs scored.
21 total players saw the field against the Owls (12-18, 2-8 LEC) in the doubleheader with 15 of the 18 who recorded a plate appearance getting a hit. Across 10 innings of work, the pitching trio of senior right-hander
Morgan Bolduk (Vernon), sophomore right-hander
Alexis Michon (Montville), and junior right-hander
Carley Stoker (Sandy Creek, NY) allowed just one run on five hits while striking out 16 batters and walking only two.
Eastern Conn. 10, Keene State 1 (F/5)
After a leadoff single by graduate outfielder
Cassie Woods (Mystic) and a walk issued to Tyrrell, Matyasovsky got the scoring started with a towering three-run home run which would be the first of three first-inning home runs for Eastern en route to five total in game one. Senior third baseman
Julia SanGiovanni (East Haven) made it back-to-back home runs with a home run to left field and junior catcher
Carolyn Biel (Wallingford) capped off the five-run first inning with a solo home run of her own.
A solo home run in the second inning by Tyrrell and a two-run home run by Stoker in the third gave the Warriors a commanding 8-0 lead while Bolduk spun a perfect 3 2/3 innings to start the game. The only blemish on the right-hander's afternoon would be a solo home run given up to junior shortstop Sara Cote on a 2-2 pitch in the fourth which trimmed Eastern's lead to 9-1.
Adding her fourth RBI of game one, a Matyasovsky sacrifice fly in the fourth made it 10-1 while Bolduk polished off the fifth inning, earning her seventh win of the season. The Vernon native finished with a five-inning complete game giving up one run on three hits while striking out six.
Eastern Conn. 16, Keene State 0 (F/5)
A nine-run first inning was all Eastern would need to take control and get the victory in game two. A two-RBI double by Matyasovsky, four singles, and a double steal helped nine Warriors cross the plate against first-year right-hander Carissa Miller.
Getting her first hit of the season en route to a 2-for-3 afternoon, senior catcher
Grace Leone (Brick, NJ) lined a two-RBI single in the second inning and the fifth error of the game for Keene State led to two more Eastern runs, making it 14-0 after two innings. Three more Warrior runners would cross the plate between the third and fourth innings highlighted by an RBI double from sophomore second baseman
Sarah Remillard (Grafton, MA) to bring about the 16-0 final score. In game two, Remillard went 3-for-3 with two doubles, two RBIs, and scoring all three times she reached base.
Earning her first collegiate hit, first-year shortstop
Victoria Heaphy (East Haven) hit a line drive single up the middle in the fourth inning. Heaphy appeared in six games coming into the day with four at-bats before earning her first hit in game two. Pitching four shutout innings,
Alexis Michon earned her 12
th win of the season while allowing two hits, striking out seven, and walking one before giving way to
Carley Stoker who pitched the fifth inning, striking out three and walking one.
With two more hit by pitches in the doubleheader,
Julia SanGiovanni has now been hit 16 times this season and 48 times in her 110-game career. The 48 hit by pitches ranks seventh all-time in NCAA Division III Softball history. Amanda Clark (2011-14) from University of Redlands holds the record with 80 hit by pitches spanning 166 games.
Eastern will travel to UMass Boston (6-6 LEC) to face off against the Beacons in a Little East Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at UMB Softball Field. The Warriors defeated UMass Boston by mercy rule in both games last season at Clyde Washburne Field and have not lost to the Beacons since 2017.
