BOSTON, Mass. – It was the day of the pitchers when Eastern Connecticut State University Softball traveled to UMass Boston for an LEC matchup on Saturday afternoon and earned a doubleheader sweep 6-2 and 9-0 at UMB Softball Field.
A game one pitchers' duels of sophomore right-hander
Alexis Michon (Montville) and senior right-hander Hayley Catania in game one gave way to the 41
st no-hitter and 36
th complete game no-hitter in program history by senior right-hander
Morgan Bolduk (Vernon) in game two.
It was the first no-hitter of Bolduk's career who coming into the game had thrown five one-hitters during her four-year career with the Warriors (28-4, 11-1 LEC). The Vernon native allowed one runner to reach base for the Beacons (19-15, 6-8 LEC), falling just short of the third perfect game in program history, allowing a two-out walk in the bottom of the fifth inning to junior first baseman Jordan Toomey.
Bolduk's no-hitter is the first complete game no-hitter in nearly 10 years when back on April 26
th, 2012 four-time All-American pitcher Molly Rathbun threw a complete game no-hitter against Wesleyan University at Clyde Washburne Field. The complete game no-hitter is the first on the road in 11 years when Rathbun earned her fourth career no-hitter against UMass Dartmouth on April 19
th, 2011.
Eastern Conn. 6, UMass Boston 2
One runner would reach base for both teams as a pitchers' duel got underway between Michon and Catania for the first three innings. Hitting her ninth home run of the season and 34th of her career to move with six home runs of tying Arielle Cooper's program record of 40, senior first baseman
Brooke Matyasovsky (Orange) got the Warriors on the board first with a two-run home run, making it 2-0 in the fourth inning.
An RBI single by junior second baseman
Alyssa Vilchez (Brampton, ON) in the same inning extended the Eastern lead to three before a double by junior designated player
Carley Stoker (Sandy Creek, NY) and junior catcher
Carolyn Biel's (Wallingford) sacrifice fly in the sixth inning made it 5-0. The Beacon offense responded with two runs against Michon in the bottom half of the frame on a two-run double from junior infielder Sydney Sanden to cut their deficit to three, 5-2.
A wild pitch plated the sixth run of the game for the Warriors in the seventh inning as Michon earned her 14
th win of the season with her ninth complete game giving up two runs on three hits while striking out 14 batters.
Eastern Conn. 9, UMass Boston 0
Similar to game one, only one baserunner would reach base in the form of a walk issued by sophomore right-hander Brianna Melchoinda to senior catcher
Grace Leone (Brick, NJ) through the first three innings. Eastern got on the board first against Melchoinda when an RBI single by senior third baseman
Julia SanGiovanni (East Haven) down the right field line plated graduate outfielder
Cassie Woods (Mystic) for the first run of the game.
Narrowly avoiding the mercy rule after six innings, the Warriors plated six runs in the sixth inning with a two-RBI single from Stoker and RBI single from Bolduk. The big blow of the inning would come off the bat of sophomore second baseman
Sarah Remillard (Grafton, MA) who hit her first home run of the season, a three-run home run, to make it 7-0 in favor of Eastern.
Bolduk would add another two RBIs on a seventh-inning single to make it 9-0 before retiring the Beacons in order in the bottom of the inning to secure her first career no-hitter. In seven no-hit innings, Bolduk faced 22 batters, striking out 10 of them and walking just one.
The doubleheader sweep allows the Warriors to maintain a two-game lead on the top seed in the Little East Conference. UMass Dartmouth (9-3 LEC), Castleton (7-3 LEC), and Southern Maine (7-3 LEC) all currently trail Eastern by two games in the loss column. With sweeps of the Corsairs and Spartans earlier this season, the Warriors currently hold the tiebreakers against those two teams.
Eastern will return home for a Little East Conference doubleheader on Senior Day at Clyde Washburne Field against Rhode Island College on Tuesday afternoon. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 4:00 PM. In four matchups last season, the Warriors won by mercy rule in all four games while outscoring the Anchorwomen 54-6 across the contests.
