Softball: Eastern Pitching (Two Shutouts) Shuts Down Wesleyan in Sweep

Michon improves to 10-1 with second-game win

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- Three Eastern Connecticut State University pitchers struck out 14 and allowed only four hits and senior All-America first baseman Brooke Matyasovsky (Orange) slammed her 31st career home run as the No. 8 nationally-ranked Warriors posted 7-0, 5-0 non-conference victories over Wesleyan University Friday afternoon.

The doubleheader sweep is the fourth straight for Eastern (20-4) against Wesleyan (7-9), which entered the game batting .349 as a team, but was limited to four singles.

With the win, Eastern reached 20 wins for the 29th time in program history.

Senior All-America Morgan Bolduk (Vernon) allowed three hits with a walk over the first six innings of the first game and senior Carley Stoker (Sandy Creek, NY) closed it out with two strikeouts in the seventh. Bolduk (5-1) lowered her ERA to 0.58.

Alexis Michon
ALEXIS MICHON
Seventh straight win... 88 strikeouts in 68 1/3 innings this year
Sophomore Alexis Michon (Montville) won her seventh straight decision with a complete-game one-hitter with 11 strikeouts against one walk in the nightcap. En route to her third shutout, Michon improved to 10-1 and lowered her ERA to 1.23. Michon, who has twice fanned double-digit batters this year -- has struck out 88 in 68 1/3 innings and averages 9.0 strikeouts and only six hits and walks per seven innings.

Matyasovsky hit her team-leading sixth home run of the year in the opener and finished with three hits, three RBI and two runs on the afternoon. Graduate All-America centerfielder Cassie Woods (Mystic) reached with two hits in each game and had two sacrifice bunts, while senior third baseman Julia SanGiovanni (East Haven) had three hits, scored three runs and drove in one. Woods has reached safely in all but one game this year.

Graduate rightfielder Alexis Tyrrell (Torrington), junior leftfielder Taylor Darby (South Windsor) and junior second baseman Alysssa Vilchez (Brampton, ON) all had two hits for Eastern, which had 21 hits -- seven for extra bases -- in the doubleheader. Tyrrell also chipped in with two standout defensive plays in the outfield that robbed Wesleyan hits.

Vilchez had a triple and three RBI on the day and senior catcher Carolyn Biel (Wallingford) had a hit and two RBI. First-year player Maggie Baker (Hudson, MA), the team's top pinch runner, scored twice and stole three bases on the afternoon. Although she has come to bat only three times this year, Baker has scored 14 runs and has begun her career perfect on 15 stolen base attempts.

Two-time defending Little East Conference tournament champion Eastern (3-1 LEC) returns to conference play Tuesday with a 3:30 p.m. home doubleheader with Western Connecticut State University.
