Track & Field: Warriors Make Early Conference Statement in Outdoor Opener

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The returns, obviously, are early (first meet), but the Eastern Connecticut State University women's and men's track & field team made a statement in their opening outdoor meet of the season, recording the top marks so far in the Little East Conference a total of 25 times at the Wesleyan University J. Elmer Swanson Spring Classic at the K. Tucker Anderson '63 Track Sunday.

The men and women posted the best marks in the conference in all three relays, with the men registering the top marks thus far in the LEC in ten individual events and the women in nine. In addition to more than two dozen top LEC marks, two men won individual events and two of the men's three relays claimed gold while one woman and one women's relay were first in their respective fields.

Two men and three women each posted the best LEC marks thus far in two events: for the men, sophomore Adam Schimmelpfennig (Pomfret), who set both indoor hurdles records this year, ran the fastest times in two events this year in the LEC in winning the 110 hurdles (15.05) and placing second (57.46) in the 400 hurdles. His time in the 110 hurdles was .05 seconds shy of the program record held by current assistant coach Andre Reynolds. First-year runner Sam Klein (Shelton) established the best times in the LEC on the opening weekend of the outdoor season by placing second in the 200 (22.59) in a field of 42 and fifth in the 100 (11.32) in a field of 31.

In addition to Schimmelpfennig's win in the 110 hurdles, indoor and outdoor 5000 meter recordholder Ryan Escoda (Newtown) won the 5000 (15:41.92) for the fourth time in five career outdoor meets in the fastest time in the LEC this year. Escoda had broken his 5000 meter indoor record earlier this year at Wesleyan.

Competitors in the winning men's 4x100 (43.07) – which posted the eight-best time in program history -- were sophomore Eric Phongsa (Pomfret), Klein, junior Kaito Yasuda (Columbia) and Schimmelpfenning; combining to capture the 4x800 (8:37.04) were first-year runner Josh Maddox (Broad Brook), sophomore Liam Stafford (Alexandria, VA), junior Thomas Stone (Glastonbury) and first-year runner Jake Thompson (Portland).

Led by Klein, Eastern runners ran the five fastest times thus far in the conference in the 200, and led by Stone's second-place finish in a field of 38 in the 1500, recorded seven of the top eight fastest times in the LEC in that event. Stone's time of 4:12.09 was the 13th-fastest in program history.

Posting two No. 1 marks in the LEC this year were seniors Wendie Stewart (Hartford) and Mackenzie Dunn (Middletown) and junior Alyssa Sirianni (Vernon). Stewart won the discus (119-6) by over six feet in a field of 28 and was third in the shot (39-5 ¼) among 29; Dunn was third in the long jump (16-5 ¾) and seventh among 36 participants in the 200 (27.49) and Sirianni was second in the 400 hurdles (1:09.73) and fourth in the 100 hurdles (16.70).

In addition to Stewart, the 4x800 relay also claimed a first place finish (10:42.60). The relay was comprised of junior Carly Alston (Franklin, MA), sophomore Iris Bazinet (Pomfret), junior Elisabeth Rodil (Milford, NH) and first-year runner Kayla LaMalfa (Portland).

Eastern travels to Springfield to compete in the 11-team AIC Yellow Jacket Invitational Saturday at 10 a.m. at the John G. Hoyt Track & Field Complex. The meet includes four Division II and Division I institutions.
